The dilemma 
 Geoff has had his 1993 Nissan Pulsar SSS since new and is looking to step into a later, safer model. He clocks up big open-road distances and needs something reliable and economical with enough grunt for swift overtaking. Geoff also wants something fun to drive, with a manual gearbox, good looks and space for his two kids.  The shortlist 
 Alfa�s 147 is likeable but � sporty GTA model excepted � a bit short on the grunt Geoff is looking for. A tightish back seat and boot also mean its practicality isn�t up to bigger rivals on his shortlist.
