Speaking Spaces, No. 1: Heterotopia

Peter Kvidera is Minneapolis, US based artist Peter Kvidera, who has previously released albums on Aether Sound, as well as creating material for Triplicate Records and contributing a track for Jogging House’s ‘A Compilation For Oceana’ in 2021. After dedicating time in childhood making music with trumpet and guitar, Peter progressed into manipulating electronic sounds in high school and he has been doing it ever since. His work now is typically born through experimenting with new techniques, instruments and processes; throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.

For ‘Verism’, a liminal sleep sound became the hook, as a fuzzy form of minimalism sprawled across 9 hazy tracks. A simple loop-based approach was adopted, gathering sampled instruments and field recordings and funneling them through software utilities. Peter was interested in exploring the line between music and sound, questioning what makes a group of sounds take the step into becoming music versus an audio collage of gathered sounds. He experimented with manipulating the timbre of instruments and other audio, to explore the tipping points of whether their original source is still traceable.

It is Peter’s hope that this work of obscured sounds and textures falls just over the line, into musical territory.

All About Love

This is an excerpt from a 36 minute piece for the Longform Editions label, a collective for deep listening. Came out a few weeks ago.

Artist notes: 

This piece is the result of nearly a month spent in the Canadian city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during Autumn. I was in Saskatoon to develop a new work and much of my time was spent wandering around this city, which I discovered was also referred to as the 'city of bridges' recording various bridges, as well as streetscapes, the South Saskatchewan River, and people vibrating various structures in Saskatoon, raised pavements, the bridges themselves, and this very cool and narrow pedestrian and train bridge. I have been interested for quite a while now in the ways people contribute sonically to the making of particular spaces, and so this was my focus here. In this recording you will also hear various recordings from cafes I visited in Saskatoon, and the soundtracks I encountered there, I should hat tip The Underground Cafe where I went almost every day. There is also the bass throb from one guy's car who stopped to pump out some thrash metal-ish sounding music, but from the outside all I could hear was this muffled thump, which I found quite hilarious and excellent and also there is a sample from the Saskatoon-based band Waitress, who are a very excellent band I met while there and who allowed me to use a snippet of one of their tracks for this piece. Apart from some very minor edits this piece was performed as it is live in my studio in Brixton, London using field recordings from Saskatoon alongside vibrating wires, strings, squeaking magnetic tape, a zither, shakers, a gong and an owl horn. It is based loosely on the performance I gave in Saskatoon for the Sounds Like Festival in October, 2018.

City Of Bridges (excerpt) out now on Longform Editions

The structure of Malakosha is based on a repetitive textile weave which, on each repetition, is proportionally augmented until it is 24 measures long. Melodic patterns and change within these patterns also follow the structure of the weaving pattern. The work takes its title from the pentatonic Indian raga on which the harmony and tonal range of the music is based. Each section expands by adding more notes to the repetitive melodic patterns. Over the course of the work the role of the "noisy patterns"  develops: initially they are in the background and then gradually become part of a louder soundscape with the live instruments.

in recent years, the turkish drone-pop composer ekin fil (born ekin üzeltüzenci) has been refining her talents in the realm of the film score. since her first recordings that were published by root strata and students of decay, she has always exhibited a preternatural ability to express the saddest of emotions through sound. once channeled through the lens of a gauzy shoegazing smear of guitars and voice, she has peeling away layers of her ephemeral songs to reveal their emotional core. that compositional process that works so well for her award winning film scores informs the soft-focus tenebrous pieces of her 2020 album coda. 

it’s true that any number of these pieces on this album could announce the finale to an emotionally draining movie, but ekin sculpts the entire album as a whole, dissolving one perfectly tempered piano motif, an impressionist ambient plume or a sibilant vocal melody into another. just at the threshold of perception, she occasionally invokes cascades of distant noise that easily can be interpreted as the ominous premonitions for natural disasters - incoming storms, earthquakes, or tidal waves. this subtle disquiet amidst the introspective melancholy furthers the emotional weightiness of coda.

her somber, blissful compositions have considerable gravity of their own in the constellation of grouper, felicia atkinson, and harold budd.

Coda

Ekin Fil // On Sand

The music of Naarm/Melbourne composer Lisa Lerkenfeldt channels a unique wavelength of foreboding, interstitial electronics, incorporating strategies of musique concréte threaded with veiled currents of melody and hypnosis. Recent recordings for Vienna Press, Longform Editions and Aught Void have demonstrated different depths of process and finesse but her latest, Collagen, captures perhaps the most complete and complex manifestation of her craft to date.

Drawing on a disciplined palette of peach wood combs, contact microphones, piano, strings, and feedback, the album moves in low, looming arcs, ascending to strange purgatories of opaque atmosphere. Lerkenfeldt cites a core aspiration to “elevate the everyday,” transforming common objects into otherworldly sound sources, which colors Collagen with a beguiling tactility, like vibrations traced in sand. The tracks shift in frequency and feeling, alternately heady and bodily, acoustic and synthetic, isolated states of static, light, and undertow skirting the outer rings of ambient, noise, and modern composition.

Although each piece exists in its own rare air the composite panorama they present is striking in its sweep and subtlety. Lerkenfeldt's muse seems one of evasion as much as evocation, navigating negative spaces for their subliminal whispers of dread or beauty. It's an aesthetic both ascetic and exploratory, minimalist mirages of resonance, texture, and gravity skewed through the pensive glow of room tone.

But Lerkenfeldt is too versatile an artist for purist restraint, which Collagen demonstrates dramatically in its closing cut, “Champagne Smoke.” A quivering bowed eulogy ebbs under a flickering film of distortion, slowly swelling in sorrow until suddenly the screech goes silent, revealing a murmuring phantom haze hidden beneath the strings, like a specter lost in an abandoned house.

Signals is an absolutely beautiful new collaborative effort between the much beloved Finnish electronic artist Lau Nau, and the brilliant Swedish composer and pianist Matti Bye. Each composition is based on the transformation of the various textile patterns or weaves into musical language. The methodology of mapping is concluded in PhD thesis at Durham University.  Textile patterns reflects distinct motions and atmosphere due its different structure and description. Indian ragas serves for the structure of harmony in order to construct a close relationship between sounds and textile patterns. Every Indian ragas has its own time, duration, specific mode of pitches as the textile patterns, which reflect various cultures and weaving methods.
