I recently had some time to really sit down and finish a new track up encouraged by an immediate necessity to finish before upgrading my laptop. I'm proud to say that this is probably as hard as I've ever gone with a track with a heavy kick and thin pads interlaced with short vocal chops and a distorted bass. It's different for me.

I recorded this audio diary last night in one take. It is an interpolation of an aLL vINyL set I played 03 March 2023 at The 700 for a series called Basics. The original recorded audio is probably lost, but it's 95% of the set + I wanted it to fit on a CD.

It's unhinged and you'll love it like all my freeform vinyl mixes (lol) at least it's honest and the records are ossum. The Electric Ballroom suite in the middle was a vibe myself and my crowd enjoyed then: all those 12" singles sound so pure and they keep the floor moving. It's also a self-indulgent 303OD with artistic merit.

My intention is to recenter control to creators.

This set recreation is from last weekend's Ancient Puzzle Arts show at The 700. Ironic, the last two uploads are set recreations from The 700 due to completely unrelated tech issues. As usual, a super-fun time was had: There was a good group there, we danced with abandon... In fact, it was so good, I didn't take one photograph. That's how I know I had a great time. And the people really popped off to the UK 12"s. Whether the performers on them are from the US or UK, the pressings of some of those UK 12"s circa-1990 were just peachy... and punchy. Goodness, they did the business! Philly, you always pleasantly surprise me. I love you and everyone who came out: you got to hear some secrets from my childhood that were very personal to me and it brought me great joy to share them with you. If you missed it, here are those stories. They are my gift to you. May they rain sunshine and love on your life, too.

1990 Live The Dream

This is (almost unbelievably) a live performance by pianist Horia Mihail of my Piano Etudes I and III. This was performed live in the Krannert Center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on or about 1991. He also played Beethoven's Sonata No. 30 in E Major Op.109, and Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales.

This vinyl mix was inspired when I was playing out around July at the UNITED party. I grabbed a bunch of records I'd been accumulating from my past days of 90s raving in jax and thought what the hell? There were a few people who were really raving hard that night and I knew I had to record this. There was a lot of dancing behind the decks for this one and probably should have been more focus on actually mixing but you know the drill! There was a casualty though, originally i was going to play red alert by basement jaxx, but the down side to dancing while your mixing can be that accidental needle drag and it was fatal. Enjoy Jay Dee's Plastic Dreams instead! BTW LSG's Train of thought is one of those songs that haunts my dreams to this day.

I’ve been planning a Black Dog mix for a while, and I feel they deserve a few words. 

My love affair with TBD began in 1993, during the Warp Artifical Intelligence era, when I bought the Black Dog Productions EP (https://www.discogs.com/Black-Dog-Productions-Black-Dog-Productions-EP/release/4617) from Tony’s Records on Park Street in Bristol. For a random purchase it was about as serendipitous as they come –  I was buying most of Rising High’s ravier output back then, and this looked interesting, and was probably quite cheap, but little did I know what an electronic masterpiece I was about to acquire. My old mate Ben of @dubkasm needs a mention here. We would listen to Atypic’s Otaku – the lead track, and generally regarded as one of the finest examples of original, emotional techno - over and over and over. It’s a timeless classic, and a perfect example of the idiosyncratic Black Dog sound – a warm, endearing, exuberantly joyful quality. Not so long ago, Ben reminded me of once saying the opening gurgling noise (the bit sampled by Orca/Wax Doctor) sounded like a computer swallowing. Oh, I miss those days 😊

Balil’s Flux on the b-side is also a thing of phenomenal beauty, its bounciness contrasting with beautifully poignant pads, and in fact it is Flux that’s included here - I deliberately left Otaku out, to force a sequel at some point. 

This mix compiles some of my favourite material from their golden era as a collective, prior to their split post-Spanners in 1995 – the exception being a couple of bits from Ken Downie’s solo 1996 LP Music for Adverts, as for the most part it has that classic Dog vibe. No need go into the technicalities, apart from pointing out that dealing with the unusual time signatures in the later parts of the mix required brain-crunching bpm mathematics, but I couldn’t settle for fade-mixing, these songs are so worth the effort.

Sending this out to Paul @distantworldtransmissions, Josh @the-roadblock, Mr Hump @user-244983548, and Mihail P @mihailpetrovski, we are clearly bound by our love of the finer things, hope you enjoy this fellas. More than anything, I hope this mix converts a few fresh ears into digging back through the early material - Bytes, Trainer, Parallel, Balls, Dogma - there is so much gold to mine there, hence the inclusion of LP/EP references.

I need to give a special mention to Richard J. Lockley-Hobson @t-e-u as I have him to thank for my introduction, via his wonderful mixtapes, to the likes of Norte Route, Whirling of Spirits and the utterly fantastic Temple of Transparent Balls, not to mention scores of other classic electronica LPs I would have otherwise missed while busy spending all my music cash on hardcore jungle throughout 93-94.
