"Tolkowsky's Refraction" is the escape from a personal predicament: As a political person I feel the urge to not only take a stand as a private individual but also as an artist. However, I have not yet found a convincing way for myself to accomplish this task by means of abstract, instrumental music. 

Therefore, I chose to use the complete opposite as a subject: the very formalistic structure, the absolute order and elegance of of the perfectly cut diamond. The model of this ideal cut, also known as Tolkowsky’s cut, is based on geometric calculations that ensure the optimum brilliance and fire by a maximum of light refraction in the facets. This piece is my retreat into mathematical precision, prosaic numerical proportions and regular angles in the light of the epitome of mineral beauty and purity.

The composition’s structure is based on the proportions, angles, and facets of Tolkowsky’s model. Musically, it is inspired by quality criteria of a diamond such as clarity, symmetry, dispersion, pleochroism, scintillation,, fluorescence.
