E2E: Tell us about some of the nostalgic memories, environments or experiences you had when you were growing up, discovering your taste in music? 

Taking the 50min bus trip to the city (Bergen) over the bridge from the island Sotra and through the tiny village I grew up in, listening to radio-tapes or my own mixes from the night before. Speeding through the forest highways with a fresh drivers-license listening to CDs from Bergen Music Library. Hearing music from sitting on the curb outside the nightclubs I was too young to get into. Going to the record store Nøstekollektivet after school. Hearing the "Indisco" track seeping through the door from the neighbour apartment (who made it) of the other apartment I went to buy imported Montana spray-cans, listening to the first mix-cd I ever purchased (Roy Davis Jr). The train station in Bergen (Where I'd be taking the train to Voss where I moved away from home to go to school when I was 16). Listening to and taping Norwegian FM-radio. Listening to and "taping" (to MiniDisc) Gilles Peterson's "Worldwide" show when I was a student in 2002-2004.. Listening to my friend's tapes and mixes playing basketball or skating in the summer.. and yes.. think that's it, for this one in particular..

E2E: Are you working on any projects or releases you'd like to share? 

Remix 12" of Joan Bibiloni with Sotofett and me just out on Saft Records now. A remix out on Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label out in a few weeks, a remix of Norwegian band Hubbabubbaklubb too + some other remixes in the pipeline.. Just launched my new monthly radio-show called "New Massage" on Refuge Worldwide radio in Berlin. 

The next European Carryall 12" will be out in April.. followed by "Point Breaks / Beach Breaks Vol.2" a few months later. And another European Carryall 12" due in Summer/Autumn. 

I think the coming times will be an outlet for everything I've been doing in this weird vacuum-year 🤓✌️

LTJ Bukem - BBC 6 Tom Ravenscroft Pre Boomtown Fair Mix July 2015

Bryan Gee has been involved in music since his youth, starting off as a reggae soundsystem selector and pirate radio DJ. After already starting a prolific DJ career, he and long time friend Jumping Jack Frost started the infamous V Recordings in around 1993. 

V Recordings soon became one of the most important labels in Drum & Bass, releasing some of the first tunes from new artists like Roni Size, Dillinja, Die & Krust and many others.

He was also responsible for one of the most important weekly nights in London in the late 90’s and early 2000’s called Movement. Known as a home of brand new, quality music, this was the place to go to check out what was fresh.

This just serves to highlight what a love and ear Bryan Gee has for Drum & Bass – and this is still the case today, highlighted in his new mix for the SUNANDBASS Podcast!

Active since the mid 1990s, DJ Yazi has been integral in crafting the experimental clubbing scene that Japan is renowned for. Both as a member of the the avant-garde hip hop collective and a record label Black Smoker Records and an El Nino resident for two decades, he draws on inspiration from across the musical spectrum: the mentality of hip hop, the intensity of dub and jazz, the ferocity of techno and the euphoria of house. 

We’re delighted to welcome his versatile and masterful technique this week to our mix series, in a tripped-out, fluid journey across the breadth of his influences. Dig into an hour deep dive traversing minimal breaks, warped percussive lines and intense builds.

Toulouse's master craftsman Redeyes delivers his fourth album “Selfportraits” on Amsterdam imprint The North Quarter. Known for his deeply detailed, emotive take on Drum & Bass, the French pioneer has a career spanning over 15 years. After three previous projects on The North Quarter – including 2018's opus “Broken Soul” - he now returns with the profound “Selfportraits”. Written almost exclusively during the Covid-19 crisis, this album captures a time spent in sheltered reflection. Drawing on both musical influences and personal beliefs this album is both deeply personal and touches on important issues of our times.

“The album was made during the lockdown and it all came together quickly. I was just spending time at home with my kids, splitting time between making music and home-schooling. It was just a time where I felt sheltered and comfortable with the music just flowing naturally,” Redeyes explains. “My music is not just dance music. I've always seen my art as something that transcends the dance-floor, and all the greatest artists in the world - from painters to singers to actors - have always been engaged in important fights. So why don't we do it, why are we not as engaged as our favourite artists from other genres are? Its time to make the difference, its time to be the change. This album is musically what reflects the core of my Drum & Bass sound. But this album is not just my own self-portrait - it's also the one of the guests. Lenzman
Lenzman is a DJ and producer who exhibits tremendous talent in the many peripheral footholds of Drum & Bass. The course his career has taken in the last few years is an enviable journey many only strive to achieve. As testament to a dynamic musical upbringing, Lenzman’s style and sound has coalesced from his early involvement with a Hiphop collective, an ongoing love affair with Soul music, and having witnessed the life and demise of London's Blue Note club.

Dan Stezo
Originally started in the Hiphop scene, Dan crafted his style and microphone skills with approval of local soundsystems. When long time confidant Lenzman introduced Dan to Drum & Bass he found a new passion and began to start making a name in the Dutch scene. To broaden his horizon Dan explored different genres and performed at all the top Dutch venues and festivals. Dan Stezo released tracks Dan Stezo released music on various Dutch imprints such as BMKLTSCH RCRDS, Hardsoul Pressings and Spinnin Records.
