Earth Mix

With our 15th episode, we welcome another very talented artist to our Herbarium series. It is @alkini, the label head of the fabulous imprint @a-biotic. In his journey, he leads us through many different stages of consciousness, mixing intriguing beatless pieces with hypnotic rhyhthms.

Alkini chose the plant Lavender / Lavandula for this trip. Some words about it from his side:
'Various influences, various hues. 
I wanted to write something that resonates with myself using music that I admire.

Its color being my favorite and its scent never leaving me indifferent, lavender is the plant that brings back the most memories for me. 
It originates from Provence, in the south of France. A familiar place to me.

Originating from the western Mediterranean basin, lavender was already used by the Romans to preserve linen and scent baths. 
In Provence, lavender was employed in the Middle Ages for the production of perfumes and medicines, but it wasn't until the 19th century that its cultivation expanded.'

Herbarium No 15 - Alkini - Lavandula

With two major milestones upon us today, we're fortunate enough to be celebrating with one of the finest in electronic music. A new year is upon us and today we also reach a major podcast milestone, to celebrate we welcome none other than contemporary techno legend, DJ Nobu for MNMT 400.

With decades of experience and as founder of both acclaimed party ‘Future Terror’ and record label ‘Bitta’, DJ Nobu has slowly but surely turned from being one of Japan's finest, to one of the world’s most in demand selectors. A great friend of Monument who delivered an incredible closing set at our first ever Monument City Festival in 2023, we couldn’t be happier to be marking the occasion with him. 

For this very special mix Nobu presents a stunning introspective excursion through electronica and deeper shades to celebrate the two milestones.

Infinite thanks and gratitude to everyone who has made this journey over the last 12 years possible; from all the incredible artists we've been lucky enough to showcase to you, our beloved listeners.

MNMT 400 : DJ Nobu

It's certainly been a very strange and unpleasant year, finishing on an extremely sour note. However, some very, very wonderful and beautiful music has been released despite this, helping elevate one's spirit above the noise and dismal situation our planet is facing.

I didn't celebrate new year (a pint with my pal was it)...but earlier in the evening I made myself record this 2.5 hour mix of some of my favourite ambient and downtempo music of the year.

It includes Saeko Killy, Ramzi, XIII, Michal Turtle, Alek Lee, Quade, Pieter Kock, Secret Circuit, Erik Wollo, Ssiege, Jon Keliehor & Signy Jakobsdottir, Greville & The Lonely Voices, Finis Africae, Khidja, Froid Dub, Sign Libra, Habitat Ensemble, Simplists, The Black Frame, Kane Ikin, MD Pallavi & Andi Otto, Claire Rousay, Deep Nalstrom, Juna, Severin Black, Peter Power, Shakali and maybe a few others.

Cette semaine, schisme.s vous invite à découvrir le répertoire singulier d’ @amselysen (aka Hakeem Lapointe), qui fait écho à sa propre musique à travers celle d’une trentaine de morceaux. Relatif nouveau venu sur la scène montréalaise, il se distingue rapidement par sa signature sonore: morceaux courts et directs, production soit robuste ou douce mais toujours angulaire et accompagnement sporadique de voix rigoureusement stridentes. C’est cette vision bien articulée qui se révèle sur ses deux albums sur la défunte étiquette @genotcentre ainsi qu’un EP sur Dream Disk Lab, mais ça pourrait également très bien décrire sa sélection.

Fluid Matter

Super stoked about this one ! @fluidmatter is a prolific artist, deeply rooted in the French electronic music scene.

As a label manager, he co-founded Virtual Forest Records, a label that’s been a key player in the unstoppable rise of the deep mental techno scene. Early on, the label gained attention with compilations that featured amazing tracks from artists like A Strange Wedding and Jacques Satre. More recently, they made waves with the acclaimed album by RM Estali, a huge personal favorite of ours.
As a DJ and composer, Fluid Matter blends his love for UK bass music with more hypnotic, psychedelic soundscapes. We witnessed the magic first hand on a sunny morning at la Vallée électrique Festival where the virtual forest crew can usually be found every year, and its exactly what’s waiting for you in today’s show.

This well-rounded hour tells a full-on story that blends nostalgia with futurism. Arranged with a couple of twists to keep you on your toes.

Sinuously unfurling bass lines + heavy dub delays bring a warm and steamy feeling. Soft and silty, speedy drums layer over subtly driving low ends and ambience. Deliciously delicate pitter-patter; ethereal sass. 

Fluid Matter is a Paris-based DJ, producer, co-manager of the label @virtualforestrecords , and part of French electronic music webzine @seeksicksound .

James Clements is the mind behind the production alias, ASC. Growing up in different areas of England, on a steady diet of Motown, Techno & the blossoming UK Hardcore scene, his productions manage to encompass such a wide range of these influences. Starting out DJ’ing with a bunch of like- minded friends on pirate radio stations while still in school, ASC soon found himself getting interested in how the tracks he was playing were made. This led to an investment in a modest studio setup, which proved to be a defining point in James’ life.
