Ani/live Thirty Seven: Kavil @ Absorb(ed) II

We are insanely excited to present a crazy and non-trivial set by Cursor Miner filled with exclusive material. Cursor Miner is the musical Nom De Plume of electronic music producer Robert Tubb from Selsey,  UK. 
He has produced six albums, released on Lo Recordings, Uncharted Audio, Sine Language Records. His styles range from full-on Acidic Electro Bass club stompers to experimental New Wave synth pop, through avant garde abstract noise constructions all the way to tongue-in-cheek educational songs for infants (and the infantile at heart). 
Cursor Miner has also produced club-focused 12”s and EPs for Jerome Hill’s Don’t Recordings and Bleeper, Si Begg’s Noodles, Combat Recordings, Unbearable Recordings, Addictech, Seed Records, and more.
He has performed live sets in fifteen countries, in varied venues such as a Bohemian hilltop castle, a Soviet nuclear bunker, a disused London underground station, a Norfolk windmill, and the former headquarters of the International Olympic Committee. Legendary festival appearances include Sonar, Latitude, Glade Festival, Unorthodox Paradox, Norberg, and Bloc Weekender.
Since 2015 he has been based in Berlin, developing synthesizers and audio effects for Ableton such as Wavetable, Spectral Resonator and Meld.

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- I am about to release part two of the dystopian electro EP series Apocalypse Incorporated on Bandcamp. This will feature some of the tracks heard in this here mix. I also have a new album of songs with vocals coming out this year. This will be probably the most downtempo thing I've ever done - themed around death and mortality, jolly vibes all round!

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- I think my recent electro binge was triggered by Carl Finlow (Silicon Scally), his stuff always has that magical groove to it. Unfortunately, maybe because I'm not a DJ, I tend not really to follow labels so much I'm also quite out of touch when it comes to the current scene! Also being a bit old, “recent” to me now means anything in the last 10 years...

My music taste is also so wide ranging that the amount of time I spend actually listening to dance music has diminished quite a lot since the internet gave us access to literally anything. Outside of electronic mucic I'm also heavily into Matt Berry's stuff, I knew him from his comedy work but turns out he's a great songwriter also.
I just recently started learning to play bongos, and have this random fascination with classic funk stuff and latin big bands like Tito Puente, even though I would never make anything remotely like it I still find it inspiring rhythmically. The subtlety and feel that real percussionists manage is something for all electronic beatmakers to aspire to.

What inspires you now to create music?

- It can be all sorts, it could be a track I hear in a club that just makes me want to make something vaguely comparable, it could be a modular patching demo on youtube, or even a book. I just read The Creative Electronic Musician by Thomas Brett and its full of tips and tricks that all just make me want to fire up the stuff and get making things. Sometimes I'll just be out cycling or something and a beat or a phrase will pop into my head, I'll record it into my phone using my mouth and then months later will pick it up again and try to recreate it for real.

What set-up do you use when creating music?

- I have a Dave Smith Tempest and a Novation Summit for drum machine and synth duties, also a Eurorack system for the more crazy sound design and generative explorations. Hardware is fun and inspiring, but at the end of the day I just find I really need the precision of a DAW to get the sound I want.

We have been witnessing genocide in Palestine for more than a year, and since October 1st, 2024, Israel has invaded Lebanon, defying any moral logic. Our community in Prague has been organizing and spreading awareness in a highly Zionist Czech society for many months. Transmission for Lebanon is a collective effort to take a stance and support the cause of Lebanese sovereignty and anti-colonial struggle.

All proceeds from this album will be donated to the Lebanese Red Cross, Beirut Synth Center (who are in direct contact with local shelters in Lebanon and providing resources to the displaced), and Secours Populaire.

Our effort is to support the resistance and stand against the suffering of the Lebanese people. We believe in anti-colonialism and the freedom of the Global South from Western imperialism. 🇱🇧
