The second in a series of self-released Liquid Earth Physical Records, “The Breakdown” is a front flip into curbside clubbing.

The Aside offers two impeccably tight mixes of the 12” title tune, both providing different licks of pleasure for the casual clubber. “Charms Of Gaia” is forward leaning, equipped with big room, big energy type vocal breaks. “Trips & Skips” is an ode to the stripped down wigglyness of one of UK Tech House’s greatest, Nathan Coles - a clear influence of Mr. Earths.

From here, we are sat next to the two black sheep of the 12” on what seems like the most pleasurable road trip of a record. B1 being the beefed-out break tune titled “The Closer” and B2 the straight and narrow slammings of “Cobblestone Stomper,” a track surely given its holy legs by the OG Jerusalem Cruiser.

What you won’t find on this record is senseless filler, instead, you’ll surely be pumping your face with the permanent botox that is Liquid Earth. Now let’s see that smile!

'Celebrating his 25th year as a producer and DJ, London’s Silverlining announces his first ever double-vinyl artist album, ‘Simulacra’, a brand new collection of emotive yet powerful body music from his South London studio. Known for his diverse and bassline-driven grooves, this work sees him straddle between the stripped-back house and techno that we have come to adore on his acclaimed Silverlining Dubs series, with eclectic forays into territories of electronic musicality unexplored by him until now. Adopting a similar analogue workflow and kit-list to that used for his 1990s productions, the collection retains his trademark sonic brilliance, whilst demonstrating, once again, that his ideas are far from running out.
 

Subtly interwoven into its mood and lyrics, the album explores themes of dependence on misrecognised digital identities, and the importance of real world tangibility. Adopting Jean Baudrillard’s definition of the word ‘simulacra’ — “the generation by models of a real without origin or reality” — the tracks and vinyl have been given abstracted nomenclature to allow for the listener to infer their own meanings and order of play. “We’re in the midst of a turning point”, Silverlining states, “where nearness and authenticity are more valuable than ever before. Given recent events, real life collectivities are going to play a crucial role in maintaining this.” For the album’s artwork, Silverlining has collaborated with celebrated print-making  artist, Leonie Bradley, whose work explores similar themes.
 

The album opens with ‘Contracultura’, a 12-minute genre-bending journey of two halves. Making an unlikely flip from electro tenacity to warm deep house, the track’s distinctive bassline arrangement underpins a haunting Vocoder mantra to countercultures. Next up, ‘Aura’ shimmers with Detroit inspired keys and a feverish vocal sample. The crystalline and infectious house groove of ‘Fulcra’ is laced with dreamy synths for the early hours. The second disc launches with a hop, skip and jump on ‘Schema’, where an old school organ-bass drives the track towards flanged atmospheric keys that culminate in pure vibe. ‘Observa’ delves into hazy, dub laden abstraction, with its low swung breaks that wander beneath slick spoken word vocals from Miami’s Ntem (Soulclap). On ‘Tundra’, Silverlining calls on vocalist, Saba, for an old school, acid drenched and impassioned Chicago groove that meanders with sheer class in the spirit of bygone halcyon days. Closing out with panache is, ‘Recognitia’, a flashback to the feel-good golden age of 90s hip hop, featuring Ntem & Saba who both bring a unique flavour to the record with their duet.
 

This versatile collection of new music from Silverlining caters both for tasteful record collectors, and deeper DJs alike, with its extensive yet consistent spectrum of flavours. Shortly after this package of solo work, Silverlining will also be delivering a collaborations compilation of reissues from his illustrious past via Dutch imprint, Ninih, and includes sought after tracks from projects such as Two Right Wrongans, Impossible Beings, Appleheadz, and Southern Comforters.'
