The chamber ensemble Sinfonietta VivazzA is pleased to announce a collaboration with the Dutch-Peruvian composer Maria Alejandra Castro Espejo on a comission that celebrates the life of the Afro-Peruvian activist, feminist and community leader María Elena Moyano (1958-1992). This project will feature Sinfonietta VivazzA with a soprano soloist (who will embody the character of Moyano) and will be premiered in 2022. ¡Viva la Vida! will explore the tragedy of Moyano’s assassination and pay tribute to her fight for equality and women’s empowerment. In 1998, a movie was released based on her life; however, this new, 45-minute dramatic song cycle will be the first musical composition written about Moyano (2022 marking 30 years since Moyano’s death). This project is funded, in part, by Fonds Podium Kunsten/Performing Arts Fund of the Netherlands, the Artist Stipend from the NRW- Corona-Hilfen Fund, the Initiative Freie Musik e.V and Cultural Office of Cologne, as well as an Ensemble Stipend  from the Federal Council of the Arts as part of their "NeuStart" Funding

On September 15, 1945, Anton Webern was shot by an American occupation soldier in alleged self-defense in Mittersill, where he had taken refuge from the approaching Red Army. Thus ended the life of one of the most influential composers of the modern era in an inconceivable and tragic way.

60 years later - on September 15, 2005 - two commemorative events for Anton Webern will take place within the framework of the 10th Composers' Forum Mittersill: for an event in public space, Karlheinz Essl has created the algorithmic sound installation WebernUhrWerk for computer-controlled Carillon. For the subsequent commemorative concert in St. Anna's Church, he wrote WebernSpielWerk for Toy Piano, which is a kind of projection of the Carillon music onto a toy piano. The pervasive character of the carillon, which filled the whole place in the afternoon, is reduced to the "poor" sound world of a toy piano, whose sound produced by struck metal rods resembles that of a bell - but is much more restrained and intimate.

This composition was written in the last days of August 2005 and is dedicated to Isabel Ettenauer, who premiered this work on September 15, 2005. It consists of four movements:

I. espressivo – mit einem gewissen sprechenden Ausdruck
II. molto rubato
III. Gemessenen Schritts (wie Totenglocken)
IV. sehr frei – molto intenso

Due to its lineup, "Panta Rei Express" is an odd one out in my repertoire. I play 12-string acoustic guitar (which I really can't play) combined with a looper. On top of that, you hear a digital voice 'singing' texts from a technical manual.

The voice was created using the SimpleSong text-to-speech program (1998) which ran on Mac OS 8.

"Panta Rei Express" is track number 4 from the album "ZenSnack" released in 2003, self-published on CD. Track remastered in 2024.
