“That singular feeling of possibility when hearing a new piece of work that instantly resonates will never get old for me,” Gi Gi told me in an interview earlier in the year. “It’s what I’m always searching for as a listener and selector, and what I strive to one day achieve in my own work as well." 

The Austin-based artist’s statement could be from one of the many like-minded producers making electronic music in the US right now—not least the artist on remixing duties here—but it feels particularly apt when listening to any of the Texas producer's work as Gi Gi or Kept, especially ‘OYC (Jung DJ Remix)’ from the forthcoming Era Mauro Remixes.

On Era Mauro, the US producer directed his focus squarely at the dancefloor. The same is true for most of the remixes on offer here, except for Jung DJ's reinterpretation of ‘OYC’ which falls somewhere in the territory between ambient and techno. The track possesses a lot of the qualities present on the New York producer's recent Lillerne release; there's a kinetic energy to the song—largely down to the immaculately mixed drums—but also a spaciousness that lends itself to a more introspective, solitary environment. Like so much great music to be released by US artists lately including Ben Bondy, Purelink and Pontiac Streator, ‘OYC (Jung DJ Remix)’ lies at the intersection of beats and ambience with no strict adherence to one specific sound or genre, just an honest desire to craft interesting and exciting electronic music people can resonate with. Speaking as a fan, it's safe to say that ‘OYC (Jung DJ Remix)’ succeeds in doing that.

when russia invaded ukraine it altered everything. writing music in these troubled days, during these historical events has become more sublimated than it has ever been; habitual leisure has been replaced by volunteering, the territorial defense of hometown, or the front line in the army. despite everything, music remains a significant part of our lives and continues to be the voice of history, communication, time, and memory.
