In a really unusual dream, I was alone as I strolled through a pitch-black forest.
As I walked through the forest's trees, I experienced a sense of being lost.
I made an effort to capture the feeling through music

We Never Left

Diese neue Komposition widme ich meiner geliebten Mutter, Ruth Agnes Kruhl, welche heute vor einem Jahr starb. Die Eingangsmelodie basiert auf dem geistlichen Abendlied „Nun ruhen alle Wälder“ von Paul Gerhardt (1607 – 1676). Die vorletzte Strophe daraus hat sie uns Kindern oft als Gute Nacht Lied vorgesungen:

„Breit aus die Flügel beide,
o Jesu, meine Freude,
und nimm dein Küchlein ein.
Will Satan mich verschlingen,
so lass die Englein singen:
'Dies Kind soll unverletzet sein.' “

Der zweite, „elektronischere“ Teil beschreibt zunächst die Gefühle der Trauer und Nachdenklichkeit, zum Ende hin dann aber auch der dankbaren Erinnerung und hoffnungsvollen Zuversicht, dass unsere Lieben auch nach dem Tod bei uns und um uns sind. 


I dedicate this new composition to my beloved mother, Ruth Agnes Kruhl, who died a year ago. The entrance melody is based on the spiritual evening song "Now Resting All Forests" by Paul Gerhardt (1607 - 1676). The penultimate verse of it she often sung us children as a good night song:

"Spread out the wings, O Jesus, my joy, and take in your little one. If Satan will devour me, let the little angels sing: 'This child shall be uninjured.' "

The second "more electronic" part first describes the feelings of grief and thoughtfulness, but then, finally, the grateful memory and hopeful confidence that our loved ones are with us and around us even after death.
