With the fifth instalment on New Zealand based Pepper Records, Pool Sharks (Tom Kirby and Charlie Spargo) bring forth a textured collection of sample-based tech house that’s excitingly functional for the club and dance floor.

Coming off a tremendous two-track release on Helix (the first under this moniker), the duo’s deft application of chord stabs, percussive bounce, and echoed vocal chops makes for a house-head’s dream contemporary record, and permits a resurgence of the quintessential deep house hallmarks.

With a vehement tip of the hat to the ever-inspiring, genre-specific artists to emerge from both pre and post 2000, the EP shows similarities to the likes of early tech house figureheads Nathan Coles and Silverlining, or later French house successors Janeret and DJ Steaw.

"Orange Crickets" starts out the EP with a jumping, jacking, club-ready piece, built around satisfyingly archetypal chords that mesh perfectly with its accompanying counterparts.

Eric’s ID exhibits a soaring golden-hour house bopper, riddled with airy chords and a drifting voicemail - perhaps from Eric himself.

B1's “Diggers” provides a percussive-driven club tool with tribal subtleties, quivering stabs, and alluring vocal samples.

Meanwhile, LCM fuses a tasteful bassline with jacking kicks and hi-hats in another cohesive production which rounds of the EP.
