Dense & Pika celebrate a hat-trick of releases on their Hotflush home with a display of mercurial melodic flair.

With all the hallmark analogue, dust-treated sounds, the record kicks into gear with the unpredictably lush piano refrain of ‘Colt’, betraying a level of sensitivity not normally associated with the boldly direct duo.

Elsewhere, they’re as visceral as expected. ‘Black Deep' a demonic workout, all kitchen-sink percussion and body-blow bass, whilst 'Vomee' cruises along a bed of sparse atmospherics, dub-indebted stabs and bastardised vocals. 

Rounding off the EP is their most refined work to date. 'Airless (Live)' recorded in one take with live percussionists, woodwind and modular synthesizers, exhibiting their latent versatility and teasing at the possibilities yet to come.

A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

Back at our mammoth Stay True Scotland broadcast earlier this month, one track came real close to bringing The Caves' roof down during Nina Kraviz's powerhouse headline set. "I Wanna Go Bang" very nearly executed its titular statement – well, if the song was more about wrecking balls and less about...oh, never mind.

The vocals that stalk the track, so wholly devoid of humanity, rub up against razor-sharp claps and serious bounce in the subs. It's weighty warehouse techno of the highest order, set to devastate dark basements and big tents alike throughout the year. Simply put: Icelandic producer Bjarki has delivered a bomb.

Way back in 1988, there was a sound from the hip-hop, rap, and DJ culture that burst into my life much like EDM and trap music. It consumed me with this all-American ego and a harsh dose of reality. Those sounds came from the gangster rap juggernaut of our time, NWA. Dr. Dre had this way of storytelling and integrating clever skits though the composition of his music that inspired me to tell a story within my music. As my interest sparked, DJ'ing became a part of my life and their influence became my weapon. I played their sounds at house parties, school parties, everywhere I went.

Three decades later, I feel so fortunate that I lived during the beginning of the West Coast rap scene. With this new movie for NWA, it reminded me how much their music left an impression on me during my youth and still influences me on a daily basis. Being in the game so long, I thought... why not pay tribute to the group that got me started in the first place?
