“Temporal Enhancement” is a sonic exploration of the perception of time. Each sound is an event. Each event a ‘here and now’ perception, experienced and consigned to memory. Each sound exists in the ‘specious present’ and exists for a set duration before ending. Temporal space in between each sound populates the narrative of present and past. The brain relies on memory to bring order and meaning to the sequence and to notice changes across the passage of time. The experience of harmony or disharmony all depend on the placement of events, the spaces between these events and relation of each event to each other.

“Temporal Enhancement” brings together a range of abstract ambient, folk, microsound and modern classical influences to create its narrative. Audio artefacts are interwoven from a range of manmade and natural acoustic sources. Details are preserved or lost, clarified or confused through the compositional process. Each track is an offering, an invitation to join external signal and internal perception. In a world where the perception of time can be both a joyous or painful experience the sounds offer an insight into the human condition. Autistici works on the premise that the true and final experience of any sound belongs in the mind’s ear of the listener.

In the words of Francis Bacon: “Perhaps one day I will manage to capture an instant of life in all its violence and all its beauty.”

Autistici is David Newman, a UK electronic music composer who is based in Sheffield (UK). Autistici’s work incorporates a wide range of sources including textural sound design, orchestration, space and fragments of found sound or field recordings.

Autistici - Slowing Down Before You Stop

This is a bit of a play with the Roland System 1m and the AIRA Modular Scooper I picked up yesterday.  I created the Scooper loop from the System 1m Osc1 output, then just "played" the controls of the 2 units manually (System 1m LFO triggering its VCA, no other patching on either unit.)

I went to the local pro audio shop yesterday to buy a Roland JX-03 before they're sold out, but I got hypnotized by the AIRA FX modules - specifically, their amazing programmable feature set!  There's a little constellation of modular functionality inside each unit.  The shop was out of the Demora delay unit (my first choice) so I went with the Scooper (who doesn't need yet another loop recorder in their rig?)  The limited number of physical controls on the hardware helps keep things focused (otherwise you'd be constructing an entire 90hp instrument out of each module.)  I'm looking forward to a deeper dive - been reading some great ideas on Muff Wiggler.  Who needs more voices when you can get hold of abundant new opportunities to create mayhem with the voices already at hand?

Disquiet Junto Project 0214: Microtonal Errata
The Assignment: Bring to the fore the distinction between two specific microtones.

Created a Pure Data patch that generated random base pitches along with the 2 corresponding microtones. Recorded the results and transferred it to Samplr so I could play the sound. Used that for one of the tracks. 

Created 2 additional tracks consisting of only the 2 microtones panned left and right and again played in Samplr. These tracks, minus the base note, more clearly highlight the interval between the microtones. 

Added a repeating percussive track derived from the original recording to contrast with the random sounds of the other tracks.

Organized into 2 parts. The first uses fast, bell-like attacks, the second moves into more amorphous sounds. 

Created with Pure Data, played in Samplr, assembled and edited in Audacity.
