The Dark Road

This piece won the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Walter and Dinah Wolfe Composition Award, and was performed by pianist, Rolf Hind in the Stevenson Hall, Glasgow on 11th May 2018. 

The initial inspiration for this piece came while I was walking in the mountains on the Isle of Arran.
As I climbed upwards I was transfixed by the complex glimmering surface of the granite rocks, which came off in shards in my hands as I gripped them for stability. The mountainous landscape that seemed so strong and permanent was in fact very fragile and eroding, undergoing a process of natural decay.
This piece reflects the rough, fragile instability of these mountains, which seem so removed from human life and yet share our vulnerability, especially with the affects of climate change and the destructive impact of humans in these precious landscapes.

Granite Prayer

Electra Perivolaris (b.1996) is a composer and pianist from Scotland.
Described as a ‘Classical Star of the Future’ in a BBC Introducing article, Electra has had her music performed across the UK and internationally by musicians of the Hebrides Ensemble, the BBC Singers, Red Note ensemble and DeCoda ensemble in venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, BBC Maida Vale Studios, LSO St Luke's and Glasgow’s City Halls. Last year she was selected to be an Associate Member of the London Symphony Orchestra’s Soundhub scheme for Emerging Composers. She is Ambassador for the BBC Young Composers' Scheme. 
Electra has been described by BBC Radio 3’s Verity Sharp as ‘one of a new generation of female trailblazers’ following a broadcast of her music on ‘Late Junction’ and was selected by Radio 3’s Katie Derham as ‘one of 11 inspiring female composers from past to present’, alongside composers such as Meredith Monk. Electra's music is centred around the depiction of physical and emotional landscapes, often incorporating other elements, such as text, film and recorded sound to reflect on the natural world and our place within it, linking to her interest in folk music and the impact of music on communities. Her music has been described by ‘The Scotsman’ as ‘striking and sure-handed..elusive and mercurial’. Sir James MacMillan CBE has described her as 'one of the most exciting young composers emerging in Scotland today.'
