Deeptrax go even deeper with ‘Hi8tus’ – the first album from Detroit pioneer and forerunner Suburban Knight in over 12 years.

One of the earliest protagonists in the epoch-defining, landscape-changing Motor City cultural movement, and a card-carrying Underground Resistance member, James Pennington’s fingerprints are all over Detroit’s nascent phases as he mentored the likes of Mike Banks, collaborated with Kevin Saunderson and appeared on formative Transmat dispatches in the late 80s and early 90s. 

Preferring a behind the scenes role for many years, Pennington has operated in the shadows, only ever releasing music when he’s had something to say. There have been long periods of silence in his discography but in recent times he’s returned with a series of singles and outings on Mollison Folson & Derrick Lewis’s Detroit Techno Records. 

Now time to level up once again and remind us of his sonic skills and stature, ‘Hi8tus’ thrives off its timeless futurist schematics, each one instantly tapping into the deepest of Detroit sources, but doing so without any repetition or covering old routes. 

Largely breakbeat-based, Pennington pays homage to the electro foundations in a wide range of forward-facing ways; the uncompromising icy opener ‘Far Far Away’, the hazy soul and dreamy waves of ‘Spiritual Ride’ and the gnarled, brittle brutalism of ‘Stalker Turned Electro’ (a nod to one of this most enduring bangers back in the day – ‘The Art Of Stalking’) map out the parameters of Knight’s navigations. 

In between we have brooding, pensive moments of tension. The four-to-the-floor prowl of ‘Thy Will Be Done’, the b-boy swagger of ‘Machete’, the glacial dark side voyage of ‘2 Different Worlds’, the list of immersive explorations goes on… 

Proof that when it’s in your DNA it doesn’t matter how long you pause between releases; it’s about what you say with your music. Suburban Knight’s hiatus is well and truly over.

If you decide to look up the strict definition of outsider in any dictionary, you'll find that the term is understood as "a person who is not involved with a particular group of people or organization or who does not live in a particular place".

Perhaps this is the most accurate description of Santiago Merino. For a long decade and from his native Medellín, this DJ and producer has always tried to keep his sonic spectrum open. An interdisciplinary artist capable of freely navigating through a myriad of genres is rarely encountered, and that may be the reason why Santiago enjoys a non-negotiable respect in the different scenes that make up the music circuit of his city.

On this occasion, Back Door Records is pleased to serve as host to receive one of the most anticipated facets within the range of music produced by this Colombian artist. The Outsider marks the debut of a new project signed by Merino, a new hunch in which house takes the helm of an EP entitled 4 Club Use.

Composed of five tracks, 4 Club Use seems to show us the true essence behind a genre that has almost been trivialized over the years. In this case, El Outsider decided to take the basic ingredients of tech house to produce a recipe much richer in flavors, textures and melodies. "Fire People", for example, leaves the window open for the airs of Detroit techno to come in and cool off any sunny afternoon. "Outsider" and "The Heat", on the other hand, are seasoned by the purest amen breaks, as if it were a blessing intended solely for the dance floor.

But the real deal across 4 Club Use is definitely El Outsider's own edit of Merino's track "Those Days". Raw and forceful kicks, meticulously sampled vocals and pads that seem to wrap them magically, make this bomb one of the candidate tracks to take the absolute podium of 2023.

After a 5 year hiatus, DJ Bone at last returns to his Subject Detroit label one final time, with new album FURTHER, the final chapter not just of his Beyond album trilogy, but of the 25 year history of Subject Detroit itself.  As the final new release from DJ Bone on the label he started in 1998, FURTHER opens the door to a new era which will launch later this year with a new imprint of the same name.
 
Named for the event series that began in DJ Bone’s adopted home city of Amsterdam in 2020, FURTHER is both a continuation of the preceding 2018-released entries in the trilogy (‘A Piece of Beyond’ and ‘Beyond’), and an indicator for what’s to come from DJ Bone in the future, described in his recent interview as DJ Mag cover star as a desire to make music that’s more futuristic, universal and experimental, and a resistance to letting others define him.
 
FURTHER is all of those things and more, both a distillation of what has made him one of Detroit’s most potent talents, as well as an artist constantly intent on evolving.  All the classic DJ Bone elements are present across the album’s 12 tracks: real Detroit Techno, imbued as it always should be with elements of other genres, with deep, immersive grooves, pulsating basslines and tangible emotion.
 
Like the most beloved moments of DJ Bone’s 30+ years of hard work & dues-paying, the album is the product of creative catharsis: “I want to convey how I feel at times as a creative: like I’m in a room screaming, coming up with dope ideas and one of a kind moves… but the room I’m in is soundproof and has no windows.
 
“The only way to know or experience what’s in there is to go inside. The outside of the room is not shiny or fancy so it’s pretty much ignored. People stumble upon the room in their quest for something uniquely different. And once inside their minds are blown.”
 
That unleashing of artistic energy is what drives FURTHER and will define what comes next from the label & events curated by DJ Bone under the name, committing to what Bone calls his “eccentric ideals, risky maneuvers, experiments and hopefulness for things to come.”
“FURTHER is the vessel for my true autonomy”, continues Bone. “Whenever you say FURTHER, it doesn’t stop. It never stops.”
 
While Subject Detroit will no longer be the platform on which new DJ Bone music will arrive, the launch of FURTHER is far from the last we’ll hear of the label.  With the back catalogue added to streaming platforms for the first time in 2022, the label will continue to present DJ Bone’s past work to new audiences through represses & remasters of classic releases, starting this year with SUB001, DJ Bone’s ‘Unleashed’ EP.
 
FURTHER is a triple-vinyl LP, pressed on three heavyweight 180g Transparent Purple 12”s, and will be released in June 2023 on Subject Detroit.

2017 sees Dekmantel celebrating its 10th anniversary. A decade ago, the Amsterdam crew threw their first party in the Dutch capital; two years later Dekmantel Records followed. To celebrate this special occasion, the label will release ten EPs over the course of 2017 – every month one, starting in March, with the first EP dropping today - from artists that have shaped them into what they are today. On the bill are, amongst others, Ricardo Villalobos, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Fatima Yamaha, Legowelt, and Tom Trago.

For this series, Dekmantel invited producers who are close to their hearts, have been with them since day one or made a big musical impact on the crew. Amongst these are longtime friends like Juju & Jordash, Palms Trax, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Joy Orbison and Young Marco. Apart from these seasoned names, it’s with great pleasure to have welcome newcomers including Huerco S, Ectomorph, Shanti Celeste, Syracuse and Levon Vincent onboard. Last but certainly not least; a couple of stone cold geniuses will be responsible for a track on the series as well. Amongst them are Can percussionist Burnt Friedman, Donato Dozzy, Tony Allen, The Egyptian Lover and Ricardo Villallobos. 

The second special EP comes from striking electronic artist Call Super—who returns after his 2016 EP on the label—and party starting house star Shanti Celeste who makes her debut after many great EPs on labels like Apron and Secretsundaze. Call Super offers ‘Fluenka Spoke’, a multi layered rack with shimmering synths and pads and glitchy beats down low. Shanti’s ‘Hinoki’ then shows off the producer’s more techno side with a tough and urgent banger that trippy sound design and soul infused chords all urging you to dance.
