Music for Tourist invite VIRAGE - 05 Février 2024

Wonderfully Japan-loaded MFI 32 by music-lover PHONON, who's part of @communityvibes.

While PHONON's main interest lies in the early House sounds that once lit up Chicago and New York, he’s also always on the hunt for lesser-known records of different (brain-)danceable genres. 

This mix is the result of amazing hours @jan-abekrfcce spent in Japanese record shops during which Phonon mainly rummaged through boxes of domestic productions from the 80s and 90s.

Here some words from him, MFI / EAV asked him to share:

"I grew up in Singen (southwest Germany near the Swiss border) to the sounds of the Flamenco and Brazilian Guitar as well as Jazz - my father was a guitar and music teacher. I learned to play the trumpet and the drums (nowadays I turn to Synths and Drum machines.)  I have a thing for synth - Early Roland Pad sounds are my favorites.

In the context of music I like to research and understand historical contexts and roots and I try to translate that into my mixes. I started my collection with late 1980s House Music, loads of which I found when I studied & lived in NYC. 

I also lived in Milan for some years and return to Italy more than once a year. After that, I was in Leipzig. When traveling, I always try to find and bring back some special records, which might not be easily found back home."

Phonon lives nowadays in Berlin since 2019, although he travels and works remotely a lot. He has put up nights and DJed at Paloma, Beate Uwe and Bars. He also plays in Freiburg, Konstanz and countries where he spends time traveling/working remotely like in Italy, the US and Japan.

Paradise Mirage is a series of events and radio appearances that he organizes, dedicated to the early days of clubbing in the spirit of NYC and Chicago. www.paradise-mirage.com

Music for Indoors 32 - PHONON (Community Vibes - Berlin)

Here at WE FORFEIT, we are always on the hunt. Discounted bread, free wine, even the odd compliment, all are fair game and very much appreciated. When it comes to music, a certain furrowed brow of seriousness is employed. 
Through our shows, interviews and mixes, we’ve tried to present electronics with a difference, electornics that make a difference. To the snowy peaks of Canada with Solvent, to the dusty plains of Almería with Mynationshit, our objective is giving a greater audience to what is already great. This month is no exception.
Travelling even furhter, the furthest in fact, this month is dedicated to Featherstone. This Australian artist, a talent that has graced labels like Gated Recordings, Nebulae and his own Ernest’s Way. He has a full hour long mix that collects acid, braindance, electro and techno while giving you some of his own unreleased works. Fantastic stuff and thanks Ben.
Robbie is on warm-up and has some freshly baked releases alongside some golden classics.  You’ll have tracks from labels like 030303, D.Ko Records and Partout with musicians like Böhm, Reedale Rise and the incredible Ismistik featuring.

Meet Matas Petrikas, a music producer, DJ, and book author with a passion for electronic music. Born in Lithuania during the time when it was still a part of the Soviet Union, Matas began experimenting with electronic sounds during his teenage years. Using self-built instruments and recording equipment, he embarked on a journey that would shape his entire career.

In 1991, Matas took a trip to Berlin that would change his life forever. There, he encountered the early years of techno culture, which inspired him immensely. In the early 90s, he co-founded EXEM, one of the first house and techno bands in the former Soviet space. With EXEM, Matas was one of the pioneers of electronic dance music in Lithuania, and by the end of the decade, they had achieved numerous hits with their original tracks and remix productions. They performed live shows ranging from intimate clubs to massive arenas, seeding the seeds of the local electronic music scene.

In 2000, Matas decided to relocate to Berlin, where he began working on internet projects for global brands and government institutions. Despite this career change, electronic music remained an integral part of his life, now from a technological standpoint. From 2008 to 2014, he joined the early SoundCloud team, tapping into his passion for sound and contributing to the platform's development.

After leaving SoundCloud, Matas started his own company, focusing on building sustainable educational toys for children. However, in recent years, he has found his way back to electronic music. Matas has returned as both a producer and DJ, immersing himself in the sounds of techno, electro and house. Additionally, he has also become an author, writing a book titled 'The Joy of Electronic Music,' which delves into the intricacies and delights of music creation.

The French producer Fred Berthet is not a newcomer in the world of the electronic scene, he is considered as a certified veteran in this field. Under his pseudonym Dj Steef he is still one of the best choices in terms of Edits, Nu-disco and Down-Tempo. As when he signs under his own name his productions for House and Deep-House .
His formula is simple, in an energetic and deep electronic atmosphere, he works on technics as subtle as effective. Fred signs the 18th release of the label by delivering an EP composed of 3 tracks, Electronic and Modern Deep-House. 

"Ethylinks" open the Ep with an hypnotic, electronic and deep atmosphere, led by a strong bassline, making the pressure growing up till the end.

« Scalla » is the second track, bringing a special balearic vibe with a kind of old school treatment to lead the listener in a psychedelic slow trip.

« Furtif »  ends the project with an evolutive and melodic construction of hypnotic synth loops, reaching a climax in an epic breakdown. Perfectly shaped for clubs !

Fred Berthet - Scalla

Martin Kuška, better known as Troniq or, by his more dance-oriented alias, GoodbyeMirage, is a truly extraordinary producer based in a village surrounded by the exceptional natural environment, a vast Central Bohemian forests growing above meanders of the river Berounka... He also wrote a book about this countryside and places within it. This close contact with nature has surely and obviously affected his influences with an organic feel, and the ambience of neverlasting processes embracing the circle of life, its ending and recovery, which can be best seen outdoors around us all…

Two reimagined tracks show an artistic transition within his two alter-egos through time (a remix of Awali, which was supposed to be on the planned second single for her LP - after the label’s very first release  - but never came out), and shows his evolution in both production knowledge and the home-studio hardware, surrounded by synths from the era he draws inspiration from, and the aforementioned natural cycles. The youth and an aged experiences bound together, the same as his musical and also physical journeys - trips through the country, and the moods of the unique landscape around the medieval castles Křivoklát, Točník and Žebrák...

This mirrors also the soft but frozen ‚Snowflakes on Blankets‘ with the warm breath of mankind`s voice (it is not a coincidence that both songs are originally sung by ethereal female vocalists). Martin initially marked his early style dreamtronica, creating atmospheric slow-mo house, interweaving sounds with hypnagogic states and contrasting feelings for the Environment and its position in todays‘ world.

Time has passed and enhanced by his equipment of historic synthesizers, he took over one of our contemporary releases, and with a `Hypnotic Mix‘ has bubblingly spiraled you into dizzying ravings while letting undecided if you're about to dance or dispel.
