Fear is the first stage of the Ratflak cycle.
The encounter with this sound begins in a register of unease. Psychoacoustically, the untrained ear is exposed to auditory conditions that bypass rational interpretation and act directly on the body. Heartbeat accelerates, muscles tense, and the impulse to withdraw arises. It mirrors the startle reflex described in psychophysiology, yet here the trigger is not physical danger but acoustic confrontation: sound that rejects harmony and order.

In this context, music is stripped of its aesthetic frame and processed as alarm. Ratflak’s architecture emphasizes this: percussive strikes echo the language of sirens, noise overwhelms the perceptual field and induces disorientation, synthetic timbres sound alien, beyond the natural. The listener, deprived of reference points, enters cognitive overload in which perception narrows to a single axis — the recognition of threat.

Fear, in Ratflak’s philosophy, is not an error but the beginning of transformation. It is the first red flag: sound that refuses to please, but warns. Through fear, the ground is prepared for the stages that will follow — anger, denial, and ultimately, acceptance.

In my mind, Jamie has curated some of the finest and most elegant deep dub and immersive ambient music and to achieve it so consistently is truly impressive.   Particularly with his Silent Season project, I was introduced to many new producers with some of those then becoming part of my Verdant Recordings family.   

We've exchanged music and thoughts since the early releases of SS but this is the first time i've hosted a set on this cloud so undoubtably, this is a very special moment for me. 

I wanted "Dub Soup" to present music from across and beyond the dub techno spectrum and this set fulfills those aims superbly....    Thank you!

New Beat swagger meets EBM menace on the latest Kri release. New York based producer, DJ and Samo Records owner Facets channels the raw spirit of late ’80s New Beat and EBM into a modern club context with stripped-down rhythms and tense electronics lock.

Four original tracks are bolstered with two heavyweight remixes courtesy of Marcello Giordani, the Italo Deviance maestro, and the iron-fisted British techno icon Broken English Club / Oliver Ho.

Lathe cut vinyl and digital will be released on the 29th of October 2025.

PREMIERE: Facets - Never (Dark Version) (KRI Records)

I built this track around a Jupiter-8 synth line that runs throughout, setting a dark, haunting tone. Even before adding any other instruments, I knew the track would be called “You Can’t Hide” because the melody carried such a somber, almost unsettling presence. 

As I layered in the rest of the instruments, I still felt something was missing and this is when I came up with a vocal sample in the second half of the track. I’ve always been drawn to working with vocal samples and often incorporate them into my productions. Having written songs and sung in the past, I am fascinated by the many ways the voice can be transformed and reused in music. In this track it definitely adds some extra dynamics, making “You Can’t Hide” a perfect electro track for dark dance floors.

OTON’s Alliance returns with 9-track album ‘Fiber Bundle’ from Parisian artist Solma. We highlighted the Belgian imprint & party series a few weeks ago with OTON’s own album & now OTON takes on the role of mastering engineer this time around. 

Solma has been bubbling within the vibrant French psychedelic scene for a couple of years. He launched his own label Virtual Forest Records with two friends in 2021 & kicked it off with an EP of his own. Since then he’s released on a number of other labels including Crescent London, Melifera sub-label Polën who we’ll be featuring in our Label Spotlight interview series soon, & Jan Swam’s Organic Signs, where he released his debut album ‘The Consciousness Of Plants’ at the start of this year. 

‘Fiber Bundle’ has this fierce, haunting atmosphere throughout the entirety of the release. The only beatless track on the album, ‘Skaub’ sets the tone for what’s to come & pulls you in right away, painting the picture of a cold & distant landscape. It evokes imagery of some kind of ice-covered otherworldly lifeform, part organic & part machine, taking deep breaths of a gassy alien atmosphere. 

Solma’s ‘Fiber Bundle’ will be available both digitally & on CD from November 7th on Alliance Records.
