Open Culture: No Borders is a campaign demonstrating solidarity with refugees and asylum seekers, as an ongoing response to the UK government’s ‘Hostile Environment Policy’. The policy has involved a slew of regressive legislations, intended to create a deliberately challenging environment for migrants to settle. In the process, we are seeing cruel approaches to the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers, the use of provocative language intended to create division and the adaption of laws which offer protection of human rights for all.

Proceeds go to Safe Passage International, who support unaccompanied children seeking asylum to reunite safely with their families across Europe, and campaign for more accessible, safer routes.

All people have the right to a happy and fulfilling life. At a time when hostile narratives and actions seek to divide us, we believe that empathy, compassion, and connection are essential values to strengthen.

Torn Hawk is no newcomer...he’s been lurking in the corners, creeping in and between various arts worlds for well over a decade: spoken word slice of life narrations as heard on NTS Radio and Trilogy Tapes; more guitar-oriented song structural work on Mexican Summer; extensive videography (PPU Party Volumes One and Two along with music videos for Torn Hawk as well as Bicep, Xosar, and more); and more beat-focused work as seen on Unknown To The Unknown and as is featured here on his 12” for Fixed Rhythms. PREMIERE⚡️Torn Hawk - Oh Yeah (Cop Collab) [Fixed Rhythms]

All those spirits, those walks of life, all those sound journeys between worlds, between continents. Australian duo KXB is back at R.i.O., bringing a follow up to their first record “Areas of Uncertainty”, released in 2023. This time an exquisite collab. With filmmaker and vocalist Thrush, member of the feverish band Concentration. The duo from Melbourne, and the singer from Berlin bring a collection of tracks, dubs and versions - written and produced over the last two years with the tape format in mind. Inspired by fabled underground cassette labels like New Zealand-based late 1980ees/ early 1990ees sensation Xpressway and mixed continuously as a nod to 90s jungle bootleg mixtapes like the Yaman tapes by LTJ Bukem, DJ Hype, Randall, or Peshay. Distinctive vocalist Thrush travelled South, and spent two sweltering afternoons with KXB in Melbourne, doing free-spirited improvisations in the studio, that were later pieced together into the resulting album. 13 variations in sound, in which Thrush's lyrics explore chasmic spaces and energies common to both Germany and Australia. Her voice dances partly on trip hopping rhythms and indie-tronics, while technoid vibes, alternative house zones, and vivid trips into kosmische top the collaboration off. A piece of art formed by a clique of like-minded souls – gathered their walks of life between worlds into explorer music of unexplored districts.

The Mission

Channeling peak-era dark garage ambience and contemporary trance stomper technology in the same breath, on their debut collaboration Silhouette (AKA Vision of 1994) and Kobayashi Maru join forces on Amphibian Records for The Mission, a 4-track EP that airlifts the snarl and frayed temper of early dubstep into the psychedelic frontiers of modern dance music.

On the A1, the title track’s driving 140BPM two-step thunder, scored with doomy metallic bellowing reminiscent of early Distance and a rolling bassline right out of Big Apple’s playbook; on the flip, Last Transmission’s frosty atmospherics and crisper-than-snow UKG-inflected percussion, a sharp retort on every third beat superimposed onto a trance-techno model.

Two lower-tempo cuts kiss each runout groove, with no lessening up in sound pressure. Winter Outpost is at the last of its tensile strength, neo-noir synths pulled skin tight over a frame of sharpened breakbeat, while End Credits shakes it all loose with a serpentine beat, a note of wistful melancholia belying the weight behind its punch.

Four cuts of divergent dance music, shaped by the waters that fed Amphibian Records’ tastes — dubstep, garage, techno, trance, trip-hop, etcetera — but charting new territory on the cusp of the known.

Kobayashi Maru is a Prague-based producer & DJ who moves sound with psy/tek flavour, techno and bass influence, organic textures and complex, pacey rhythms. A member of the Amphibian collective, Kobayashi Maru also creates music and performs live as the duo DDAT, with atch22. He is also associated with Prague’s Ankali nightclub, where he works and performs.

Silhouette, aka Vision of 1994, has made an indelible impact on the Czech nightlife scene over many years as a shapeshifting DJ and producer, through his sets and productions developing a sound rooted in the UK spirit with an Eastern European temperament.

New installment by Warsaw-based Trofika Records named  "Va_Aroundub” is a double-decker  CD compilation contains the distinctive walk-through the very subjective interpretations of the broad spectrum of dub i & its non-obvious reincarnations. Significant part of the artists invited to the projects were touching different notions of the contemporary bass music sound, for the others it was more of a adventure or some type of formal experiment. Majority of the tracks gathered on this record are brand-new and were never published before. Musically speaking you can surely expect some of that classic roots/digi, lounge/chill out, broad range of electronica, bass music, future garage, footwork/dubstep, minimal/dub techno or even noise & experimental touches.
