SEASONS- SPRING

The paun ambient series are biannual DJ sets first realized in 2020. Thanks to a diverse selection of featured artists and sub-genres, the series can be considered a study on the ethereal edges of music. @isthispaun is an emerging, Berlin-based producer and DJ. 

Our fourth guest mix comes from @zapata-zb - co-founder of @hardmatterrecords and @streetman-records. As a New York-born and Berlin-based DJ, he's obsessed with live instruments, analog soundscapes and jazz, the last a key influence in his broad selections, which you can hear throughout Hardmatter Records' show on London's @balamii Radio. Following a fresh EP, Zapata is finishing an ambient-jazz album due in 2025 while DJing at Berlin's Paloma Bar. 

Artwork: Laura St. Amant is a visual artist of Ojibwe, Métis, and Ukrainian background. A member of Henvey Inlet First Nation who grew up outside the community. Working predominantly with acrylic paint, Laura creates representational images in their perspective of daily life. This 2024 piece references the work of Alphonse Mucha as well as Indigenous plants, mystic elements, astrological motifs and contemporary times.

Melisa Aller (1979, Buenos Aires, Argentina). Experimental filmmaker and composer, PHD candidate in criminal law and human right,  lawyer, graduate and professor in political science, university professor, and researcher. In the last twenty years dedicated to work, especially in super 8 film format, filming and editing all on camera without any digital intervention. Aller's films have been awarded in festivals and exhibitions in the USA, Canada, China, Taiwan, Japan, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Spain, Poland, France, England, Germany, Italy, India, Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay, and Argentina. Since 2013 she has composed music for her films and performances of expanded cinema in Super 8. She translated her cinema process to her musical composing process: recording, remixing and recording again the tapes with new sound layers. She was the musical curator of Metamusica label records from 2020 to 2024. Now, she runs CLARA RECORDS with the composer Flores Babusci, a little label that edits in physical formats (vinyls, CDs, and cassettes).

This is my entry for the Beat Collective Challenge of 18th Jan 2026, in which those participating are given two or three samples to use any way they wish in an original track.

The challenge for January 2026 was a Redemption Round in which participants could make use any of the samples from 2025 to create and/or finish a track started previously. I went back to the October 2025 challenge for which I'd started a track but hadn't finished it. The theme was to get jazzy with 4 samples courtesy of Noiiz - a huge library of royalty free loops for subscribers.

I used the samples as follows:-
Sample 1 - chopped into 1/8 notes and used as a rhythmic device throughout the track.
Sample 2 - chopped into 1/4 notes and used as a rhythmic device throughout the track. I duplicated this and panned one left and one right. I also used the full sample in the first breakdown at 2:50. Also I used short snatches of the sample just before 1:00 through to the first breakdown and also in the second breakdown.
Sample 3 - Also chopped into 1/4 notes and used as a rhythm from 0:57 to the end of the track. I also used the full sample at 3:18 at the end of the main breakdown.
Sample 4 - Used at 2:30 to 3:00 as a fill, at 3:30 and from 5:00 to 5:20.

Who is Michael Black?

In 1970 Michael Black, wrote, arranged and recorded “Sailor Man” on the Jamburu Label in Jamaica. In 1973 Freddy McKay introduced Michael to the Solid Foundation Band. He ended up singing with them in a show in Mandeville, along with Freddie McKay, Mighty Diamonds, Sonja Spencer and many more. They joined forces and from 1973 until 1977 Michael Black and the Solid Foundation traveled all throughout Jamaica, the Caribbean, Canada and to London. In 1979 Michael Black performed at SunSplash in Montego Bay. Here he performed with some of reggae’s legends such as Bob Marley, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Stevie Wonder and many more. In 1982 Michael relocated to the United States to the Chicago area where he quickly became an integrated part of the Windy City’s thriving reggae scene, performing regularly in area clubs like The Wild Hare, Exodus and Club Dread, Club Negril and at Billy Mulligan’s at the House of Blues. He performed with Burning Spear at Park West.
He was honored numerous times by Marlin Intercultural Music Awards, including the Best Male Vocalist, Best Showmanship and the Best CD of the Year. Over the years Michael Black has been instrumental in helping many young artists in Chicago with their careers in the reggae music industry. In 2002 Michael Black toured throughout Europe with The Maleo Reggae Rockers. While in Poland they performed to an audience of 300,000 people at Woodstock 2002. In 2006 Michael Black relocated to Las Vegas, NV and debut at The Icehouse. Michael closed out the summer at The House of Blues with Summer Fever. He has performed every year since 2006 by the Annual Rock N Roll Wine in Las Vegas, NV. In 2008 Michael performed with the Jah Guide Band at Puff Nightclub in Las Vegas, NV launching a Caribbean Reggae Sunday and at Reggae in the Desert. In 2011 Michael Black performed at The Lafayette Reggae Culture Festival in Lafayette, LA where he has also performed numerous times before.

Electric Djinn is an electronic music producer, performer, and interdisciplinary artist. making computer-based sonic candy, and multimedia performances and installations with a strong focus on audio. The works combine organic sounds with that of the synthetic-- individual tracks are grounded in low frequencies, programmed beats, virtual synths, and processed vocals. Subtle layers of binaural beats and isochronic tones in combination with crystal singing bowls and other sound healing instruments are also used to raise vibrations.
