Quartet's classic 'Hold That Sucker Down' demonstrate, they are fully capable of finding material that serves to enhance their reputation further. That's certainly true of 'Weekend'. An instant classic, it combines deep house aesthetics and soulful vibes to great effect. 

Martin Carr is an established singer and producer who has released four EPs of his own this year as well as working with other producers such as SharkyP (of Dreem Teem fame) to see him score number ones on several download stores as well as becoming one of the most recognisable voices in dance music. Here he merges musical minds with exciting new producer Rare Candy who contributes the considerable skills he has shown on his recent remixes of S.Jay & Ostertag, 2 Tyme, LS2 and Fabio Lendrum. Finally, add the sultry sounds of Emiliyah, a versatile vocalist who demonstrates her considerable experience and provides the string that holds the whole package together.

Adding their own take on this future classic are two remixers also building huge reputations of their own. Greek producer Chris Madem adds big synths and a mighty kick to turn 'Weekend' into a Nu-Disco anthem, while Australia's Alex Preston delivers a bendy Future House reinterpretation that is just as strong as his hugely popular Jack U bootleg.

A new year, a new slew of sickness from chief filth peddlers Funkatech… And it starts with a lewd ode to the original badboys of modern music: rock stars.&#13;&#13;
&#13;&#13;
So press play, grab a TV set and throw it out of the nearest window as hard as you can. Funkatech mainstays Specimen A have totally rewritten the naughty rulebook with this stomping, low-swung glitch-ridden salute to the hairy heroes of guitar music feat the vocal talents of up &amp; coming rapper Suffice. Complete with a rifle-style riff, stadium-ready synth stabs, anthemic bass trills and a spitfire list of antics so wild they’d make Axl Rose blush, it’s a fine reminder of the carnage this Brighton-based trio can cause.&#13;&#13;

Defenestrated TVs aside, there’s plenty more bad behaviour across this handsome five track multi-genre EP. As well as a swear-free version of ‘Rock Star’ we also have the following…&#13;&#13;
&#13;&#13;
‘All Or Nothing’ is sheer audio drama. Swaggering in at a cool half-time drum &amp; bass tempo, it lives up to its name in every way. Snarling and sneering with an utterly schizophrenic bassline, it’s instant grime time… Until we’re slapped in the chops with a searing synth hook that’s so dreamy it shoots us into hyperspace with no return ticket.&#13;&#13;
&#13;&#13;
Up next: ‘Unforgettable’. A next-level lesson in euphoric bass, here we find the trio hooking up with firebrand chanteuse Nickita. The end result genuinely is unforgettable as we’re flicked and flung between a pumping 4/4 and swashbuckling halfstep so quickly you’ll find it hard to keep up. Laced with rich emotion and raw energy, save this one for end-of-night scenarios or those moments when your crowd need a serious level-up!&#13;&#13;
&#13;&#13;
Finally we hit ‘Closer’ where extreme party vibes are the essential order of the day. Showcasing their D&amp;B abilities with unfettered aplomb, this hook-up with the ever-emphatic Miss Trouble balances toxic levels of heaviness with fleeting moments of euphoric beauty to create a D&amp;B fusion that’s not dissimilar to Chase &amp; Status at their darkest or Black Sun Empire at their most emotional. With chest-shattering double kicks and firesome bass to match, it’s a fitting statement of intent for the year ahead from both Specimen A and Funkatech.

You might recognise his name from a previous Funkatech release: the talented French artist made his professional entrance with a remix of Specimen A’s ‘Slam Dunk’ last October. Now exclusively signed and primed for his first full-flavoured outing, Stoneway has prepared a journey from glitchy grit to spine-shuddering electro. And everyone’s invited. 

We embark with the crutch-grabbing low-tempo swagger-fest ‘Talking Funk’. Comprising layers of textured, fractured basslines and all manner of colourful synth shrills, it doesn’t just talk funk. It sings it. In many different languages. Armed with a dreamy drop and high-impact production techniques, it stomps with a power that belies its sub 110 tempo.  

Next up, ‘I’m Not A DJ’. Euphoric-but-ballsy, it instantly bombards us with oceanic synth blasts. If you’ve a tendency to thrust your lighter up, do it now – you won’t be disappointed. Dropping into the main groove, Stoneway then strips the vibe back to a bare stomp and off-beat bass concoction before building the entire track up again to a state of undiluted vibrancy. He might not be a DJ, but boy does Stoneway understand the dynamics of a DJing – this will cause commotions on every dancefloor that has the pleasure of hearing it.  

‘Awkward Moments’ is the final stage of this journey. The audio equivalent of a triple espresso, there’s a hint of empowered musical militancy amidst the rainbow-synth patterns and hip-switching bass growls. Boasting yet another heavenly drop, and some subtle vocal appearances from MC Siri himself, ‘Awkward Moments’ is the perfect balance of peaktime electro power, mischievous funk and tongue in cheek fun.
