Uji spins a hypnotic spell of sounds on debut solo release; “Alborada”.

“Alborada” pays homage to the moment where the darkness and the mysteries of night transform into new possibilities with the first light of daybreak. Electronic production and alchemy never felt so close; creating an overall infectious enchantment that feels ancient at its core while exuding a variety of tasteful sounds from today. 

Uji (Luis Maurette) is a nomadic electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and raised throughout Latin America. Half of the pioneering duo “Lulacruza” since its inception in 2005, with whom he has released 5 albums, a feature film and multiple world tours. His music is dance floor bound: rooted in various indigenous traditions while borrowing from the aesthetics and sound design of electronic music. With his new solo project he has already toured extensively around Europe, the US and Latin America even before his debut album has yet to drop.  

Reflecting his experiences in both the Latin American and Afro-Latin diasporas, Uji´s enchantment seems to suspend time, encompassing the present while drawing from primal essences ingrained in our collective unconscious, enrapturing us in the ritual of dance. On tracks like “La Descarriá” featuring Corina Lawrence and Miss Bolivia, Uji skillfully crafts scenes from the high plains of Bolivia in their yearly carnaval celebrations paired with a Tarantino-styled guitar riff. Or we find ourselves transported to Colombia’s tropical “pueblos” (villages) dancing into the sweaty night on his remix of Petrona Martinez’s “La Varita de Mariangola/Milagros”, to daybreak in a Berlin warehouse party with “Kiok” featuring Barrio Lindo. Nothing of Uji’s experimentation feels arbitrary, rather carefully woven into multi textured landscapes of sound, where a thought out process is palpable behind each risk.  

Most of the sounds we find in this album are field recordings done by Uji himself, compiling a vast sound bank over the years on his travels all over the globe, including a wide array of instruments from his collection such as; congas, cununo, marimba, balafon, charango, bombo leguero, sonajas, as well as analog drum machines, samplers, synthesizers and vocals. A multi layered assemblage with deep and rich textures from around the world. 

The album also features stellar vocalists, artists that have emerged onto the Latin American music scene such as Sof Tot, a long time collaborator of Uji and a part of the internationally acclaimed trio “Fémina”, and breakthrough artist “Anicca”, singer for the viral sensation “Perotá Chingo” who lends her commanding vocals to the title track “Alborada”. Uji also includes a remix for “Petrona Martinez”, a tribute to one of Colombia’s most prestigious singers and artists, an incredible influence on his music and a Latin American folk landmark.

TRANSE é um experimento sonoro de reciclagem e sobreposição, que se apresenta como um jogo entre possibilidades estéticas e recortes rítmicos de um mundo que, a todo instante, ressoa. A partir de samples coletados na rua, como a cadência dos chinelos soltos nos pés de uma senhora, o varrer profundo das folhas caídas no parque, o estalar do fogo no queimar da lareira e a polifonia instrumental dos anfíbios durante o entardecer, estabelece-se uma partida para a criação, sob o desejo de inventar todo um outro
universo possível para estes sonares.


Este EP é um convite à variação do mundo, por meio de recortes do espaço e do tempo em um brincar sem fim. É na dobra deste encontro, da música com o corpo, por onde fazemos eco, poema e cartografia, em um transe próprio do ser e do soar.

Com VASSOURAS riscamos o asfalto ardente com a  árvore de ponta cabeça. As folhas se arrastam pelo chão como dilúvio, imitando o vento e abrindo caminho para um outro passar, que não árvore, nem máquina, mas líquido, derrame, gozo e gesto. 

CHINELOS balança no flerte do pé com o calçado, na urgência de ir e de chegar.  Como um abre-alas do dia, anuncia o trabalho, o trânsito e o deslocamento, mas também o presente daqueles que não podem esperar.

Em SAPOS E RÃS somos povoados por bichos que cantam polifonicamente um ninar, no fazer de um território, transformando a seiva em selva e também em saliva, no deslizar  da língua por entre pontes concretas que matam a sede.

Ao fim, FOGO anuncia o último variar, crepitando desejos que traduzem-se não mais em  palavra, mas só em som. Só chama, suor, encontro. E é o calor que permite o parto de  nossa criatura, intensa, transeunte, amostral.

TRANSE é uma cocriação, um emaranhado de nós no intuito de fazer gente. 

André Flores é musicista e possui vasta experiência em música folclórica latinoamericana, tendo o violão como seu principal instrumento. Responsável pela composição, auxílio na produção musical e pelos arranjos nas partes instrumentais e vocais. 

Camila Proto é artista visual e cantora, baseando sua produção nos intermeios do som,da palavra, da poesia e da conectividade, para um fazer artístico político e potente. Colocou em transe a voz, as rimas e as não rimas, no tentar com por de variados sentidos.

Rafa David é produtor musical e DJ interessado na pesquisa sonora presente no degradê entre urbano e natureza. Influenciado pela música eletrônica feita na América Latina, agregou à produção do EP àmostra os timbres percussivos que permeiam tanto tambores quanto linhas de baixo; bem como a mixagem que busca o equilíbrio entre orgânico e sintético.

As a kid i spent most of my time wandering around in the forest finding imaginary worlds full of friendly little beings. I had friends that lived inside trees and under stones, they where singing in the rippling water and humming under the wet moss. They spoke to me in a language older than words and thru the spell of music i was able to translate their language into songs, rythms and melodies. When i became older i managed to evolve this language with the tools of electronic music composing. I started to collect sounds with my tape recorder and wove them in to the world of ones and zeros to create beats. Together with playful synth melodies, experemental beats and the warm vibrating soundwaves of acoustic instruments i started my journey into the world of electro-organic musicproduction.
