The Bumblin' Bones learned an important lesson about songwriting: there can be as much honesty in singing about a bent-up paper clip as there is in singing about two star-crossed lovers. The music that The Bumblin' Bones have been making embraces the honesty of life in it's mundane moments as well as its heartbreaking moments. A song like 'Parking Lot Heroes' tells the story of a worn and sallow man who feels truly lucky and beautiful to be drinking a 40 oz in a sun-pounded parking lot. while a song like 'No One' is the inner monologue of a man who greedily loves somebody despite knowing that his love is ultimately disallowing her to flourish. 
The Bumblin' Bones formed in April of 2014. Ian Hinkley (formerly of the bands 'Cavemen' 'Punchface Sally, Paulie Hips and the Childbearers) has been writing and performing songs on Guitar and Piano for 15 years in the bay area. Heavily influenced by Tom Waits, Jack White, Bob Dylan (with a little Talking Heads and David Bowie thrown in), he was joined by Bass Player Matt Ruff who; after years of playing everything from Punk Rock to Ecuadorian folk music, had thrown himself into the world of '60s psychedelia full force. They were then joined by Taylor Diaz (of The Grandfather Paradox) whose unfaltering, symphonized drum style perfectly beds Ian's occasional scattershot guitar style.
The Trio immediately went to work; gigging and writing new songs together based on their new sound aesthetic. 
Audiences quickly reacted to the honesty that the band was exploring; as well as the powerful dynamics of the alternative instrumentation and inventive structure. 
Over the last few months of performing, People have tried to label The Bumblin' Bones everything from Carnival Rock to Lo-fi Pop. but what they've heard the most is that the rawness of the songs and performances are inspiring and powerful. as one audience member put it; it's the kind of music that makes you want to pack up your bindle and start a new life somewhere.
In October, the Bumblin' Bones went into the studio to get to work on their first batch of recorded material. the songs that have come out of these sessions so far have proven to heighten the ideas set forth when the band was formed. the exploration of life through the prism of the honesty in a moment. I am a vocalist, teaching artist, champion of contemporary composition, and ardent fan of music of all ages and genres. I perform and collaborate with a dynamic array of composers, chamber ensembles and orchestras. While I am fortunate to work closely with world-famous composers like Jake Heggie, Kaija Saariaho, John Harbison and Aaron Jay Kernis, I eagerly seek out and perform music by emerging and under-represented voices. My artistic mission is to lift up new and contemporary vocal literature to serve as narrative for the hard to speak about issues of our times. This aspiration is demonstrated in my current recording project LIFELINE: A Year in Quarantine with Hildegard von Bingen, spotlighting how artists empower one another through digital networks to create and collaborate while in isolation. 

Over the last decade I have acquired a deep love for the art and craft of recording, collaborating with remarkable music creators like Leslie Ann Jones, Andreas Meyer, Michael Romanowski, Lolly Lewis, Donn Thompson, Piper Payne and Andy Happel. My two solo albums - Currents (2013, Angels Share) and Love Life (2016, ASR) - were produced by multi-GRAMMY® award winner Leslie Ann Jones at Skywalker Sound. Other recent recordings include Autumn Winds (2020, Ravello) and Chamber Music of Nancy Bachmann (2021, no label) and I can be heard on releases from Naxos, Arsis, Albany, Navona, and Jaded Ibis Productions.

My artistry is informed by the diversity of spaces I have had the opportunity to perform in, and the variety of organizations and ensembles I have been privileged to collaborate with – from grand venues such as Davies Hall with San Francisco Symphony, Caroline Hume Hall with Bay Area Rainbow Symphony, or Benaroya Hall with Seattle-based Music of Remembrance, to intimate recital settings with artists such as guitarist David Tanenbaum, flutist Jessie Nucho, cellist Emil Miland, harpist Meredith Clark and pianist Steven Bailey. Treasured milestones of recent seasons include curating and presenting a multi-year concert tribute to Joni Mitchell; premiering compositions by Ursula Kwong-Brown, Feona Lee Jones, Kev Choice, Griffin Candey, and John Grimmett; creating innovative recital programs like From Bay to Shining Bay - commemorating victims and first responders of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing, and Ex Uno Omnes (Out of The One, Many) - spotlighting women, LGBTQIIA+ and BIPOC songwriters; and a residency at Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory in conjunction with Cleveland Opera Theater’s {NOW} New Opera Works Festival. 

Teaching is fundamental to my artistic identity. I maintain a thriving private voice studio, and serve on faculty at UC Berkeley and the Jesuit Theology Institute. I present seminars on vocal composition and interpretation of contemporary song at institutions such as UC Davis, NYU Tisch, MIT, University of Houston Moores, UT San Antonio, San Francisco Conservatory, and Sacramento, Fresno and San Diego State Universities. I am a Reiki practitioner, enthusiastic Yogi, and pursue a lifelong interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I grew up in Lincoln, MA, earned degrees from Hampshire College, Longy School of Music and San Francisco Conservatory, and now live and teach in the San Francisco Bay Area
