Yammou is a Laz work song from the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. The Laz people are a minority group, who live in the mountainous regions of Eastern Turkey around the Black Sea. It is very unusual to find harmonized songs in Turkey and the harmony in this tune is very much part of the Georgian influence in the region.

So far is a song by the band Habanot Nechama and the lyrics are partly in Hebrew partly in English. We both speak English but none of us Hebrew. Laura learned the lyrics from an English transcription. While singing the song, Meryem transcribed the sounds she heared in Arabic letters in order to remember the lyrics. She mentioned the similarity between the sound of Hebrew and Arabic.

This song has a simple melody and the lyrics are “Daly Mamba, daly mamba yeh” The speciality of the song is the canon structure. “What is a canon?” we were wondering, while learning the song. Is canon a specific European musical form? After some small research we found out that canon is a contrapuntal compositional technique. The name canon appeared and started to be used in Europe in 16th century. Repeating canons in which all voices are musically identical are called rounds and a playful way to learn about polyphonic singing.

Daly Mamba Yeh

LM is an artistic collaboration between Meryem Aboulouafa and Laura Unger. The name is composed by the initials of their first names and has a phonetic meaning in French language saying Elle Aime or Elles Aiment which translates as she likes/loves or they (female plural) like/love. What they love is to make music and to move between cultures, languages and arts.
