An afternoon I won't be forgetting. Doing this session with Mr Vega (sorry, not allowed to be more specific). Mid session, a call from my Mom that Dad had just passed. I stayed to play one more full take, and then grabbed a cab. So what you're hearing is rather from the heart.

Client's Brief:

"Track must shout Xmas straight away – there is a lot of V/O and they don’t want the track to distract people too much.

Upbeat / celebratory / positive / can’t wait for Xmas feeling / maybe a bit magical (or sense of magic)

Genre wise – totally open but creatives are thinking Orchestral could work.  Nothing that takes itself too seriously (It’s a down to earth, brand of the people)."

Notes from  me: It took all of 65 minutes from concept to completion. Using my Fret-King Elise and its onboard Fishman Triple-Play midi controller. One 'puter running the synths/samplers and another recording into ProTools.     Ho Ho Ho :)

The first 34 seconds of a wild ride with me and my friends.

"Honey Do" - My Latest Release - begun in 1979  

That's right. In that eventful year, I began recording an album that I never released. It contained a few real gems. On a recent trip back to The States, I liberated a couple of 2" tapes. This is one of the pieces from that album, lovingly brought back to life, and featuring some really outstanding talent. With Paul Griffin on Hammmond B3, and some serious vocal performances by John Belushi and Genya Ravan. (I had the pleasure of pickin'.) It's also graced with these musicians of renown: Joe McGlohon & Danny Louis (horns), Doña Oxford (piano), Pete Pritchard (bass) and Richard Newman (drums).

A very brief demo of my brown 63 Strat, Seymour Duncan Pro Shop Hot Stack pickup in neck position, amp head (tbe) - and 3 sE microphones. A truly live, unadulterated (un-eq'd, uncompressed) result.

Pat Benetar. Produced by Ron Dante @ Media Sound Studios (NYC) - the year before the same arrangement was re-recorded for public consumption, due to ...'record biz politics'.


The band on this are Paul Shaffer (keyboards), Elliott Randall (guitars), Allan Schwartzberg (drums) and Neil Jason (bass). Engineered by Harvey Goldberg, This version is a bit more gritty and raw. We had an amazing time making this record.


There was no "final mix" or mastering. Special thanks to Wes Maebe [GHQ Sonic Cuisine] for adding that little extra audio "oomph" for this presentation.

WHEN YOU'VE GOT THE MUSIC

This track will serve as the bedding for the evocative voice and lyrics of Phillip Namanworth, in this, his composition entitled "Media Heaven", now in the process of completion.

Phillip is an alumnus of Randall's Island, Dave Van Ronk & The Hudson Dusters, has composed and arranged for countless fine recording artists. He is also known as "The Boogie Woogie Mystic".

Playing the guitar part on this was a most fulfilling event...

If you've seen/heard this on my YouTube page, be assured that the sonics of this track are very different indeed. As I indicated on that page: "The mild 'rocky' distortion you hear was produced by a glitch in the video editing software. Funnily enough, it was a surprise that was not at all unpleasant. So rather than rendering again, I decided to go with it..."

THIS track presents the guitars in a very different tonal light. While the performance is the same, there is a pristine sound quality to it. With a very special "thank you" to uber-engineer Wes Maebe, to Trev Wilkinson for designing this exquisite Fret-King Elise guitar, Wienbrock Amplifiers, and to Lewitt Microphones for the sonic integrity.
