GTF23 MIX #02 - Harari

@dj-koolt has been pivotal to the rise of his native Uruguayan scene ever since he started spinning in the 90s. Rooted in Montevideo, he made it one of the most exciting places to hear minimalist dance music. Its spiritual home is Phonotheque, the club he co-founded a decade ago and where he lays down his forward-thinking sounds to a devoted and hardcore fan base. 

The scene Godfather goes big for us this week with a two-hour deep dive into his sound. It perfectly showcases his silky transitions and ability to tell stories on the dance floor. Acid, breaks and techno are the foundational sounds but they are embellished in signature style with plenty of spaced-out designs, a sense of gritty industrial futurism and plenty of avant-garde electronics.

Beyond the A13 - music from the outer reaches of East London and Essex

Growing up on the edge of London, where the east end meets Essex, and industrial wasteland meets suburbia, my life was always reliant on four main arteries to get me to school, to work or to parties: the A13, the District Line, the London-Southend railway and the number 5 bus route. Running from the heart of London to the edges of the Thames estuary - I can’t imagine how much time I’ve spent on these trains, buses and roads looking out the window, at a landscape totally bereft of beauty, but to me, somehow always full of life and wonder.

This mix consists entirely of music that was either made or released within the areas touched or bordered by these transport links, between 1990-1997… from Canning Town, Grays, Stratford, Horndon, East Ham, Benfleet and other stops in between. Why dedicate a mix to this area? Because this is music from where I grew up, from when I was growing up. Most of it was ignored or overlooked or just forgotten - a mix of progressive house, trance, acid house, techno, breakbeat, tribal and deep house, all sounds that I like to combine when I’m DJing. It’s the sound of home…

BUTU, it’s a record collector and dj from Uruguay. He is one of the co-founder of Diggers, a record only oriented parties in his town (Montevideo, Uruguay). His sets are characterized by covering a wide musical range and showing his taste for all kinds of sound with the only requirement that makes his audience move. Influenced by old school sounds, he combines sounds ranging from italo-disco, funk, MPB, soul, hip hop, breakbeat and house.

Here he weaves in and out of house and Italo to deliver a lovely hour long mix!
