Dear Orphic, Float Records and HEDON,

First of all, I would like to show you my gratitude for the opportunity you’re giving upcoming, relatively unknown, artists (like me) with this contest. It shows you have the hearts in the right places. 

Secondly, the mix. The way I challenged myself is was in a three part way. As always, I tried to stay in the mix and really work behind my decks (I hope this translates well to the listener). Only then I can get a sense of fulfillment when I DJ. Moreover, where I personally challenged myself the most, was to refrain from the more hypnotic tracks I would play ‘normally’ and choose tracks that were ‘different’ but still that felt close to me as a person. Lastly, because my track selection differed from the usual, I utilized slightly dissimilar mixing techniques. Ones that give off a more old school ambience. 

That’s partly where the title “A Shift In Ambience” comes from. I tried shifting the ambience of sound, without feeling like it wasn’t me who was playing. I just transposed on my spectrum of musicality to a point where I felt it was suitable for the moment and my mood. 

Last but certainly not least, I truely was filled with enjoyment when recording this podcast and I couldn’t stop bumping my head around when playing these tracks. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

As it has become a somewhat common occurrence in his discography, Shackleton’s Cosmo Rhythmatic debut as Tunes Of Negation opens with a song. Its structure and, most importantly, themes, can be integrally traced within his rhizomatic net of creations, consistent with a process that’s regularly wandered through spiritual depths by means of sonic perseverance. Sung by Heather Leigh, the double – cantos continuum of “The World Is A Stage” and “Reach The Endless Sea” deal with time, or rather its illusory, treacherous nature, as well as spiritually investigating ideas of immortality, memory, and grief.

Ultimately, it is a meditation on the non-finitude of life and spirit, and the limits of perception in dealing with it. It could be argued that the whole record, as well as Shackleton’s whole body of work, represents an attempt to break those limits and trespass beyond human experience, incorporating an immense vocabulary of music traditions in order to ditch linear narratives and the established grammar of electronic music.

Shackleton’s usual arsenal of resonating woods and metals, ceremonial polyrhythms and astral melodies acquire a freer, more spontaneous character by the intervention of keyboardist Takumi Motokawa and mallet player Raphael Meinhart, whose symbiosis with the producer generates a truly beautiful and multi-directional flow of energy. The sacral austerity of the music is paralleled by its sheer, seductive, harmonic power, one that draws new trajectories in time and space with its seemingly endless layers of arpeggios, beats, and drones.

For all their complexity and propulsion, these are indeed Tunes of Negation. The title, inspired by a poem by 13th Century mystic Jalalu’l-Din Rumi, is a description of what Shackleton himself hopes to achieve with the music, to “aid transmutation and enter into the light”.

Emanuel de Vayrac is the the right person to take us on a trippy, hypnotizing and spaced out journey along his long musical experiences. 

Organizing illegal open-air raves and techno parties, Emanuel de Vayrac started producing and DJing ambient/experimental sounds in the mid-nineties. After a few musical stopovers (from punk to glamorous synthpop), he finally found his home in driving but sophisticated techno.
In 2007, the Goethe Institute invited him to play in Los Angeles and San Francisco as Berlin's representative underground DJ. Further international bookings took him to Tokyo, New York, Moscow and Yekaterinburg, among others.
In between, he attended the class of sound artist Michaela Meliàn at the University of Arts and Crafts (HfBK) and worked as a lawyer in film companies. After a residency at the former house club "Chalet", De Vayrac continuously turned to techno hotspots like Griessmühle (today RSO), Sisyphos, Tresor, Suicide Circus or the legendary Fusion Festival.
His „Habitus Berlin“ parties, to which he invited artists such as Hector Oaks, Keith Carnal, Cinthie, Dadub, Arnaud Le Texier, Cashu, Nikita Zabelin, The Transhumans, Deepbass or Joachim Spieth, were a fixture of the Berlin techno scene for several years.
