Luke 24:1-48 - Who Is This Jesus? (Easter 2025)

This sermon draws from Luke's account of Jesus' resurrection and points to the hope that we, too, shall rise from the dead because Jesus did. Based on 1 Corninthians 15:51-57, we are reminded that the death we face in this world is overcome by Jesus' victory, and we can face this life with courage, peace, and hope.

0462 Easter Sunday. The Resurrection is not the Reversal of a Defeat

Easter Sunday is supposed to be all about joy and hope, but sometimes such celebration does not feel as real as the fear and confusion of the people who were actually there at the empty tomb on the first Easter Sunday. We can know the story and believe the promise of resurrection and still feel caught in the struggle and pain of Easter Saturday, because in many ways the promise of the resurrection is still a future promise not a current reality. Rather that demanding that we put on false smiles, maybe the invitation of Easter this year is to celebrate the care involved in bringing spices to the tomb, because even in doubt and fear, love still matters.

It's Easter Sunday! We're getting started here with a brief retelling of the story. Then we get to the part where the angel says, "Do not be afraid." I have trouble with this. Maybe we all have trouble with this. There's so much in the world that causes us fear. So what makes this angel think he can come into our place of worship, look us straight in the eye and say with all seriousness, "Do not be afraid?"

After he tells us not to be afraid he makes an announcement and then a promise.  

An announcement that, if true, changes everything. He is risen. What if that's true? If it's true, it changes everything and all things are possible.

Then he makes a promise: Jesus is ahead of you. Most of what causes us fear is in the future. It's an uncertain tomorrow. Jesus is ahead of us. Jesus promises to be with us in whatever we face in our uncertain future. And that gives us hope.

Of course, hope isn't something we can just sit back and enjoy. Welp, I hope everything turns out okay tomorrow! Welp, I hope God shows up tomorrow. That's wishful thinking. Hope, real hope, is to throw ourselves into the struggle for the realization of that hope.

And that's how Matthew's story about Jesus ends. It ends with an invitation to live into resurrection - to live into hope - an invitation to let it define our lives.

Many of us were handed an Easter story that begins with separation:
You’re a sinner. God is angry. Blood must be spilled before you can be loved.

But… what if that’s not the real story?

What if resurrection isn’t about blood payment—but about re-membering what we’ve forgotten?
That nothing can separate you from the love of God.
That you’ve always belonged. You’ve always been beloved.

Resurrection invites us to reconnect—to our God-created selves, to one another, to the earth, to the cosmos.
To piece back together what’s been fragmented.
To rise.
