Amsterdam's The Shamaniac Movement let you reach altered states of consciousness with their specific shaman technique, using their „Outerlands“ EP, released on Emerald & Doreen in April 2017. Kiki Toao and Rombout Wagenaar deliver a magically transcendental four-piece EP that is the soundtrack to making contact with the spirit world and channeling these energies onto the dancefloor! The hypnotic opener „Outerlands“ with its drone guitars, mesmerizing bassline and tribal drums (kind of Rebolledo-sytle) initialise the trance state, „The Chaperone“ is the next step of the ritual with its dubbed out aboriginal didgeridoo sounds, followed by the breakbeat-driven and percussion-led „Ambrosia“ during which the Shamaniac Movement start their communication with the spirit realms to obtain solutions for the dancefloor community....which they are given...they channel it with „Foxglove“, inducing ecstasy on the dancefloor with cosmically driven basslines – and the balance and wholeness are restored! An amazing EP for everybody who likes to expand his consciousness.

Force Majeure's debut release on the 'Sulk Magic' imprint comes stocked with mind-altering treats. 
The title track 'Overawed' mesmerises with it's low-slung undulating electronics, acid flashes and arpeggio rhythms. 'Cheap Thrills' then accelerates proceedings with unfussy drums and robotic, bleep heavy melodies. 
Label owner Bird of Paradise offers up a relentless lo-fi version of the latter whilst Melbourne based Jamie Blanco provides a hustling futuristic soundscape. Damon Jee closes matters with his interpretation of 'Overawed', contributing a stripped back, double-time chugger.

Sid Le Rock - Slowpoke (Cabaret Nocturne Remix) [preview]

Having previously featured on Eskimo Recordings' 2018 compilation 'The Purple Collection’ as one half of Languages, Franz Matthews returns to the label alongside fellow Berliners Local Suicide with 'Meditation / Tutan Jamon', 2 tracks of heady disco that join the dots between the German capital and the sun soaked souks of North Africa.
 
Despite living on the same street for 4 years Franz Matthews and Brax Moody and Vamparela from Local Suicide only met recently through their common friend Sam Berdah (Days of Being Wild, Club Bizarre). Making up for lost time, the trio soon found themselves bonding in the studio, digging into their love of both the esoteric and travelling, and together channelled those passions into 2 spiritually infused numbers.
 
'Meditation'was the first result of this inspired partnership, appropriately recorded at the same time that Matthews was also recording music for a meditation app, and features a freeform stream of consciousness from Vamparela over a suitably hypnotic backing of wistful guitars and breezy rhythms. 'Tutan Jamon' meanwhile shares its DNA with recent Eskimo releases by the likes of Simple Symmetry and SHMLSS, the track built around a couple of very Egyptian influenced riffs and comes in two distinct versions.
 
Between his production studio MOWD, his duo Languages, and his solo electronic project, Franz Matthews keeps himself busy. Making Berlin his hometown for the past 5 years, the Franco-German producer and DJ has always kept one hand in the Indie Dance world, while the other wanders in more Psychedelic Pop realms, a winning combination that's seen him release music on imprints such as Eskimo Recordings, Days of Being Wild, Rockets & Ponies.
 
Local Suicide, aka DJs and producers Brax Moody and Vamparela, meanwhile have made a name for themselves putting on some of the most infamous underground parties Berlin has to offer, running their acclaimed blog and still finding time to make waves with their productions, a wild fusion of new wave, acid, slow techno and post-disco that has seen them work with the likes of Rodion, Mijo and Curses in recent years.

“It’s always an honour and a big responsibility to put together a ‘Best Of’ mix for Emerald & Doreen. How to do justice to the spirit of this unique eclec-tronic label? Luckily it has such a consistent output within a voluminous catalogue that compiling and mixing my favourite tracks off its busy release schedule usually delivers a lively, colourful mix reflecting this ace German imprint's artistic freedom and unbridled diversity, a kind of restless, captivating sonic journey pieced together from a collection of pretty faultless tunes - not that a hard task with so many killer compositions and remixes to choose from.

This latest edition is no different, and actually suggests an even more exciting outcome as - believe it or not - a pattern of sound, almost a style, is emerging in Emerald & Doreen's international stable of artists/contributors (and beyond, to be truthful). Here and there in the old continent, and pretty much all over the globe, a ‘vintage' mood is building and coming to the fore in electronic music. More and more, DJs, producers, musicians are harping back to its very beginnings for inspiration, the late 70s, early 80s when expensive technological toys - effect units, synthesisers, drum machines, midi & sequencers, samplers… - started to take over in studios from the usual way of making records (musicians playing traditional instruments without a computer in sight). No wonder, this golden era of innocence and groundbreaking changes remains the ultimate reference, a precious time of discoveries, trials and errors (with  little defined formulas to cash in), which unequivocally shaped the future without any complexes and opened the door to worlds of imaginative developments.

And indeed a lot of the tracks in this Emerald & Doreen mix - many of them carefully re-edited, tightened up to seamlessly blend into each other and sustain attention - are rooted in the euro-disco and primal dancefloor experiments of yore. Call it ‘euro retro’ or what you like, there is a strong desire to re-define the present with a timeless sound whilst escaping the uniformisation of most of today's productions by going back to basics, back to the original sounds and machines which paved the way for electronic disco and dance. Arpeggiated basslines, robotic grooves, huge gated claps & snares, evocative analog synths, cinematic landscapes... there's drama in the air and the thundering repetitive sequences that keep you grooving and swaying are unequivocal, the offsprings of the greatest producers of yesteryear are truly alive and kicking. 

2019 is looking good - at least from a musical point of view. For decades American disco has been the dominating force - and for good reason - the landmark, the start of it all, however it feels timely for Europe and its clubbing legacy to finally get the accolades it duly deserves. At long last it is acknowledged and appreciated that Europe and its electronic blueprints contributed massively to laying the foundations of modern electronic dance music. Today it is feeding again a whole new generation of producers hungry for quality and authenticity, and that truly can only be a great thing."

Julian Bainbridge makes his 12” debut on wax via his own label imprint “Sounds Over Seas”. The tracks are inspired by Julian’s love for bass-driven Disco music and the deep angles of the Detroit sound.
On the A-Side “Dimension Traveller” fuses Detroit textures with Funk energy, as it rises on an array of arpy Acid sprinkles. “Italo A” is carried by a pumping Disco beat draped in bright pads and an infectious synth melody, before closing off into a classic Disco break.
On the flip side “Demure” takes things back a dial initially. Built on the facets of a New Wave beat with lush pads, it amplifies amidst a steadily intensifying arp lead, breaking back and forth towards its pinnacle. The closer “New Light” is a feel-good bass-driven House banger amidst warm pads and a lavish synth lead. Perfect for a ride towards the sunset.
