Danza Nativa Invites 020 - Jamie McCue

For the sixteenth episode of our Herbarium mix series, we invited Endurance (@joshua-stefane), the label owner of @muzaneditions. He is a master when it comes to exquisit ambient journeys and therefore we are very happy to feature one of his beautifully told stories. 

For this mix he chose Chrysanthemum. Here is why:
I chose the chrysanthemum as the flower for this mix - specifically the Chrysanthemum / morifolium hybrid species, which originated in China and is also popular in Japan. Aesthetically, I think it is one of the most beautiful flowers, with its multitude of florets radiating from the center, or cascading down like willow branches, depending on the type. I love how such flowers can feel so complex and deep, simply through the arrangement of similar elements - and that is something that guided this mix. Using tracks from artists I love, old sound effects records from the 60s and 70s, and my own live improvisations and field recordings, I tried to layer similar or repeating elements over each other to create a complex and cohesive whole. Endurance is the ambient project of Canadian-born Joshua Stefane. Using modular synthesizers, field recordings, and cassette tapes, Endurance’s sound has become increasing minimal and tonally-focused over the years, employing a minimum of elements to create a maximum of expressiveness. In addition to releasing from labels such as Constellation Tatsu and Mystery Circles, Endurance also curates the Japan-based tape label Muzan Editions. He is part of the organizing team for Moment, a techno festival in Nara. He has appeared at numerous high-profile events such as Kyoto’s Star Festival, Moment, and Rural, and has performed with artists such as Neel, Peter van Hoesen, and Wata Igarashi.

"This mix contains several of my current favorite minimal and techno records and also several classic gems of the genre.

For personal reasons, it was recorded at night, with the volume low on the speakers, which complicated the process a bit. It's not my most technically perfect session, but, on the other hand, the situation forced me to make a kind of blend and speech without stridency and this has built a very interesting sleepy atmosphere.

It's the music I could play nowadays at an after hour club and the way I would play it."

"This is my first published solo live-set with all recent creations.

I wanted to showcase a sound I am harnessing at the moment, utilising mainly a modular system, with a large amount of the FX processing from the Eventide H7600 & Sherman Filterbank. 

I see this piece of work more as a "Audiobiography", rather than purely a Live-set as it presents a broad spread of textures and tonality that I find myself drawn to at present. 

The emotional and hypnotic aspects stand always first, to touch the heart and mind is the goal."

Utilizing a diverse palette of sounds, ranging from sharp percussion and shimmering synths to harsh drones and field recordings, o.utlier's enigmatic soundscapes create a conscious journey that stimulates the brain, always with a dense atmosphere and calm delivery in any context.
o.utlier's recordings have been released on labels such as Appian Sounds [UK], Soul People Music [US], Naif [Germany], Verdant [UK], On Board Music [DE], SZE [UK], Northern Electronics [SE], and he co-runs Titrate Records [UK] to focus on experimental works. Christian Duka is an electronic musician, sound artist & designer, immersive audio specialist and higher education lecturer. His musical outputs span the experimental and left-field electronic dance music both in his solo work and ongoing collaborative projects Vādin (with Avsluta) and MARMO (with Marco Maldarella). 

Christian's passion for immersive sound was sparked by a month-long residency at MONOM 4D Sound in Berlin and blossomed into his multi-disciplinary project UR: Human Presence — an artistic experience involving 3D sound, contemporary dance and performance art. Amazed by the creative potential of spatial audio, in 2019 he founded AMOENUS, an immersive art organisation that supports the development of immersive audio in the arts via R&Ds, events and workshops, most recently on their own custom made 16.4 sound system currently installed at The Bath House in London.

this warm sunday morning brings us a rather special offering, a hybrid set supplied by berlin based producer, and dj - sarah wreath who stretched her ambient muscles at fellow delayed favorite kato de vidts’ ambient tide series. here is what she had to say about the set:

this recording captures my hybrid performance at ambient tide in brussels—an event meticulously crafted by kato de vidts to deliver a profound journey of deep listening within an immersive environment.

centered around the chao gong as the primary instrument, the performance featured layered organic soundscapes enhanced by effects processing. this resulted in a hybrid set comprising compositions ranging from ambient to experimental, incorporating elements of icaros and ritual hymns.

the fundamental tone of the chao gong, 110 hertz, known as the fundamental pitch of om chanting, has been shown to aid in emotional processing and relaxation, exerting a profound effect on the right hemisphere of the brain. this hemisphere is recognized as the locus of artistic expression, spirituality, emotion, imaginative thinking, and breakthrough innovation.
