What is desperation? It’s actually the loss of hope and surrender to despair. But many of us are more familiar with the second definition, a state of hopelessness followed by rashness.

It’s normal to feel a loss of hope from time to time but how you act on that feeling is as important as honoring the feeling. Today I’m diving into how to navigate your job unhappiness or instability without desperation.

“She just doesn’t have the work ethic we need.“

An exasperated client shared this with me during a session. The client was referring to an employee who was:

⏱ chronically missing deadlines

❓ asking the same questions over and over again

🤝 looking for handholding and a fast paced business with zero time and even less manpower

But was it a work ethic problem? If you asked me seven years ago I would’ve picked up my pitchfork, let a torch, and join the angry “ why doesn’t anyone have a work ethic anymore” mob.

But after working with 2500 corporate leaders and employees I can tell you it’s more likely not work ethic and actually a much simpler problem.

A chance encounter with a happiness expert is always a fun experience and that's exactly what happened to me when I sat next to Scott Glassman at a mastermind event.

He is trained in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy and is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers.
