Will The Circle Be Unbroken (Cover, Arr. by David Brandt, 1-1-21)

This is probably one of the larger “productions” I've done. I’d always been moved by Greg Allman’s solo LP version of this tune. The song itself was written in 1907 and has been done countless times. When my father became ill and finally passed in late 2018, I put down a version of this. But everything was out of tune - the banjo, auto harp, etc. So I shelved it. However when my mother became ill this past year, the song came back to me and I decided to re-record everything in it except for the original vocal and rhythm guitar which seemed to me to still carry the spirit/feel that I desired.

This tune is particularly poignant during these Covid times with so much loss/grief.

Then I thought this definitely needed Youth Is Wasted’s touch and so Ann Schurmann and Erick “Peewee” Burdette both kicked in on some super vocal backgrounds and Erick added the driving bass line! Plus Erick added a killer bass lead at the end!!!!!

Then I thought, “hmmmm”, a violin would really be awesome in this and thus entered Natalia Dmukhovskaia from Russia who is a graduate of the Russian Conservatory there - and she knocked it out of the park on her solo!!!!!

Otherwise, I’m on the guitars, glockenspiel, pianos, banjo, autoharp, all percussion and the lead vocal. This was both cathartic and fun to create and produce.

Thanks to Max Ibaceta for his help in bringing this from GarageBand to Logic Pro and w teaching me Logic!

"Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" is a popular Christian hymn written in 1907 by Ada R. Habershon with music by Charles H. Gabriel. The song is often recorded unattributed and, because of its age, has lapsed into the public domain. Most of the chorus appears in the later songs "Can the Circle Be Unbroken" and "Daddy Sang Bass".
