ManJah - Dynamite

Nilotika Cultural Ensemble is a Nyabingi band from the source of the Nile in Uganda. They use traditional instruments and the full ensemble of around 15 people, including friends and family. Their music can be described as drum-heavy African Nyabingi and Baganda music that fuses traditional melodies and rhythms with Hip Hop and Reggae.

The song “Ghetto People” is about the hardship of growing up in the ghettos of Kampala and trying to find a way out without becoming a criminal. Positive music, a network of creative people and the spirituality of the Nyabingi Rastafari movement is the key to a better life.

The track features a career-topping melodic performance in Luganda and English from renowned Hip Hop artist Spyda MC, accompanied by the massive percussion and drum sounds of the Nilotika band. Spyda has toured Europe and East Africa both as an artist in his own right and with Nilotika’s offshoot band “Nihiloxica”, who have received rave
reviews from Pitchfork, Wired magazine, Mixmag, etc.

German production duo Ancient Astronauts add some groovy remix treatment to “Ghetto People” in their trademark Boom Dub style to underline the message and melody of this beautiful song.

The other day I heard someone play this tune on their boombox.
To be honest, I never was much of a fan. 
But if you think about it, it's a great song telling a dramatic story. So I gave it a try, and quickly fell in love with it. Hope you do as well!
Asked my friend Andi if he cared to collaborate. He sent a very short but nevertheless great guitar lick (you can also hear his feet tapping along; that's what you get from recording with your smartphone, but it fits in just perfect!). Unfortunately he was too busy to do more, so I had to do the rest of it myself.
