You don’t have to read the press release for Rafael Anton Irisarri‘s latest opus, Points of Inaccessibility, to know all of its conveyed emotion. It’s already all there. That is the power of music when it’s delivered through the heart and mind by an amazing artist. Sure, there is an interesting background behind this work [and one which you can read on Bandcamp anyway], but for me, it doesn’t matter. When I listened to this album for the first time, I was immediately overwhelmed with its immersive poignant arc, and then I listened to it again, and again, and again… until the four pieces became not just the sounds for the story to be discovered later through these words, but they became the sounds for the story of my own, the one where words are not enough, the one that only speaks in music. This music touches something deeply personal, and then these words come out in abstract. But when you read them, you will know at least one thing: they have been written by a human. They have been triggered by a human. And when two humans speak without words, there is a true and genuine connection. One, which we can’t replace with a digital domain. And as we sink a little deeper every day into a world of artificial emotion, remember that you can return to music. Remember that this music is the key.


Points of Inaccessibility came from thinking about how disconnection feels in an age obsessed with connection. We are constantly online, constantly visible, yet we drift further apart. The real distance isn’t geographic anymore, it’s emotional. We mistake connectivity for community. The more we share, the less we seem to feel. This album is about that strange loneliness that hides inside constant communication, a loneliness that hums quietly beneath the surface of everything. The record isn’t nostalgic. It’s about the way the present is haunted by all the futures that never arrived. We live inside systems that promise connection but deliver repetition. Everything loops, nothing resolves.

Joachim Spieth is a German electronic music producer known for his deep, highly textural, atmospheric ambient music and deconstructed, sometimes dubby, hypnotic techno. His sound encompasses everything I love about Kompakt, where he initially appeared as part of the celebrated Pop Ambient series. In 2007, Joachim founded his Affin imprint, on which he showcases many of his own works, collaborations (with Markus Guentner, warmth, and, yes, zakè), and other solo artists (Gustavo Lamas, rhubiqs, Droneghost, to name a few). 

I covered plenty of Affin releases on HC, and I highly recommend getting lost in the discography on Bandcamp. I also interviewed Joachim exactly a year ago (in December of 2024) and published this In the studio with Joachim Spieth on Headphone Commute. But today I want to share with you his latest piece, titled Rephrase, a single track (for now), which Joachim offered up exclusively to this community [and yes, he's lurking here in the background].

"This piece emerged during preparations for a live set. It is composed of fragmented elements drawn from various previously released tracks, intricately interwoven and transformed through a series of modulators evolving over time. While certain passages may sound familiar, the result is not a “version” of any existing work, but rather a hybrid composition — a fusion of multiple fragments recontextualized into a new and autonomous form."

'Muzak for the Encouragement of Unproductivity' is a poetic inversion of Muzak’s traditional role in stimulating seamless productivity in the workplace. Beginning as a pre-radio music distribution network (1934, U.S.), Muzak was transmitted along electrical wires with the intention of being at once ubiquitous and indiscernible, always present yet easily ignorable. As a pseudo-science the aim was to capitalize on the potential of music to have a psychological effect on listeners, and with the goal of maximum productivity, was employed as a sonic disciplinary force in the work place.

Previously installed for Dystopia Sound Art Biennial (2024), at the Amazon Packing Station located before HAUNT-Frontviews in Berlin, 'Muzak for the Encouragement of Unproductivity' sonically addresses utopic notions of seamless, efficient productivity, inherent to capitalist cultures, and their very real dystopic effects from labour exploitation to the impacts of over-production on the environment. This poetic inversion, further developed as an album, is not meant as a kind of melodic control but rather a reflective space in which to consider the benefits personally, globally and environmentally, of slowing down.

Reverb, essential to the Muzak aesthetic, is programmed (using convolution reverb) with the dimensions of the Berlin Amazon fulfillment centre, DBE2. Amazon fulfillment centers are global contemporary factories, promising a consumer utopia of next day delivery of almost any product imaginable. Inspired by Sam Kidel’s concept of “mimetic hacking”(1), the reverberation characteristics of the DBE2 facility perform a symbolic sonic break-in to the guarded Amazon fulfillment center, a trespass to the flow of production

Muzak For the Encouragement of Unproductivity

Fluid Audio is proud to present 'arthur & jeremias', the forthcoming album from Danish composer and sound artist øjeRum - a quiet, introspective work named after two characters from The Castle, Franz Kafka’s unfinished and haunting novel.

Like Kafka’s world, 'arthur & jeremias' exists in a space of uncertainty and longing. It drifts between presence and absence, where meaning is sensed rather than stated. The album unfolds as a slow sonic exploration, fragments of memory, half-remembered rooms, and corridors that seem to lead nowhere and everywhere at once.

Dusted loops circle gently, worn at the edges. Tape hiss breathes between notes. Electronic phrases appear like passing thoughts, only to dissolve again into ambience. There is a deep sense of nostalgia throughout, not for a specific place or time, but for something just out of reach, hovering at the edge of consciousness.

Rather than telling a story outright, 'arthur & jeremias' invites the listener to inhabit a mood. Repetition becomes ritual. Small imperfections are left intact, giving the music a fragile, human quality, as though the recordings themselves are artifacts uncovered from another era.

This is music that rewards patience and stillness. It asks for attentive listening, for surrender to its quiet pull. Like The Castle, the album resists resolution, finding beauty in ambiguity and tenderness in restraint.

The album is mastered by Ian Hawgood, whose sensitive and understated approach preserves the music’s intimacy and dynamic range, allowing the dusted loops, tape hiss, and fragile melodic fragments to remain unpolished and alive - faithful to the album’s quiet emotional core.

Released through Fluid Audio, 'arthur & jeremias' will appear as a limited, hand-assembled physical edition, created with the same care and attention to detail that defines the label’s ethos - a tactile companion to an intimate and reflective listening experience.

Since its inception in 2019, the Sleeplaboratory series has explored the intersection between Ambient music and sleep. Artists in this series were all invited to work within a restrained, nocturnal palette where calm, space and stillness take precedence. Over time, the series has become the flagship of the Whitelabrecs catalogue, returning periodically as a space for reflection and rest.

For Sleeplaboratory6.0 the project returns but with a twist as one of four compilation albums to mark Whitelabrecs’ 10th anniversary. Every piece on the compilation has been submitted by members of Inner Echo, which is a private inner circle formed around a small group of like-minded Ambient labels, including Whitelabrecs, Driftworks, Elm Records and Evergreen Music. Rather than an open call or curator-led selection, this edition emerged organically from a shared community of Ambient music enthusiasts. Remarkably, all of the submissions from the community were approved and just like the wider Sleeplaboratory series, a sense of coherence between the tracks can be felt.

The music itself moves gently across a spectrum of Ambient approaches, unified less by style than by intent. Subdued drones, fragile melodic fragments, softened harmonic fields and low-frequency textures unfold at an unhurried pace, encouraging immersion rather than attention. Each track functions as part of a wider field, designed to aid sleep, enable concentration or induce a sense of calm, whether experienced in the stillness of night or as a subtle presence during the day.

As with all Whitelabrecs physical releases, Sleeplaboratory6.0 is paired with bespoke visual work responding to the concept. In this edition the four panels of the gatefold sleeve feature photography by Arthur Newton, submitted as potential artwork by his father Adrian Newton (recording as Mosaicist and founder of Evergreen Music). The images continue the album’s community-led ethos, offering a quietly intimate visual counterpart that mirrors the album’s themes of connection, care and shared creative space. Together, sound and image form a release that reflects not only the restorative qualities of Ambient music, but the value of community.

Empty Space is an artistic platform based in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. We explore the interactions of physical media, their characteristic formal languages, and their modes of functionality. To achieve this, we focus on projects that experiment with various art forms, aesthetics, and crafts. Our goal is to create works of art that challenge conventional modes of production and reception.

To bring each project to life, we collaborate with different artists, blending their distinctive approaches and methods into something new. Depending on the medium, many of our productions are conceived as one-of-a-kind pieces or one-time performances.

Empty Space operates as a non-profit association, with all revenue either supporting the artists or being reinvested in future projects.
