Often times I miss living in the country where life seems almost too simple. The sleepy towns, sweet air and especially the autumns. Hailing from the british countryside, Worries is truly a product of his environment, perfectly encapsulating the simplicity, nostalgia and isolation. 

When I first heard Worries, they contained everything I had loved about indie pop, or rather a variant of it, which I thought had long been dead. Simply put, the debut single is a few daydreams turned to melody and brought to life.

Born in the dark streets of Cairo, grown to the unforgettable forests of Santa Esmeralda, spending its teen years in Bombay and Tangier markets, mature into the deep spacey Jungle of Ghana we proudly present you a new label from the land of the pyramids: SHANGO RECORDS invites you to an unheard world music psychedelic trip: like through a colorful kaleidoscope we will melt down Indian and Pakistani Vibes, Arab-Tek and Oriental groovy vibes, Afro-Beat rhythms n' pieces, Cumbia Tropicana flavors and cosmic Ghetto-Latin vibes into forbidden sounds of frenzied electronic dancefloor rituals. Outside traditional paths these driving grooves and polyphonic structures take the adventure seeking dancer to Dionysian highs and places never been before. 

I am the grandchild of the warrior men and women that Hintsa and Sekhukhune led, the patriots that Cetshwayo and Mphephu took to battle, the soldiers Moshoeshoe and Ngungunyane taught never to dishonour the cause of freedom. My mind and my knowledge of myself is formed by the victories that are the jewels in our African crown, the victories we earned from Isandhlwana to Khartoum, as Ethiopians and as the Ashanti of Ghana, as the Berbers of the desert. I am the grandchild who lays fresh flowers on the Boer graves at St Helena and the Bahamas, who sees in the mind's eye and suffers the suffering of a simple peasant folk, death, concentration camps, destroyed homesteads, a dream in ruins. I am the child of Nongqause. I am he who made it possible to trade in the world markets in diamonds, in gold, in the same food for which my stomach yearns. I come of those who were transported from India and China, whose being resided in the fact, solely, that they were able to provide physical labour, who taught me that we could both be at home and be foreign, who taught me that human existence itself demanded that freedom was a necessary condition for that human existence. Empty Cellar Records is stoked to announce the third full-length release by San Francisco’s Cool Ghouls, Animal Races. Fans of their self-titled debut and 2014’s A Swirling Fire Burning Through the Rye will be similarly stoked to hear how this band has continued to evolve. If the first album was a celebratory debut, and the second an earnest venture into deeper waters, this third album is like the crystal born of the murky womb that was the second record, fertilized by the initial intention of the first. Not only have the ghouls reaped the crop they sowed; they’ve baked it into some new kind of bread.

For the uninitiated – Cool Ghouls play rock'n'roll. That's about all there is to it. They're California natives. They try to do a good job. They like to try to elevate and get far out. They also like to keep it real. They like to make friends and have a good time. They don't like bullshit. They want to keep growing and learning how to become more powerful musicians. This record reflects the discoveries they’ve made over the last five years about live performance, themselves, and each other.

The eleven tracks, recorded to tape by Kelley Stoltz in his backyard studio and mixed by Mikey Young (Total Control etc.), are first and foremost documents of the four-piece’s live performance of the tunes. Many of the songs were road-tested, but - unlike the prior records - a few of them were not. This opened the door for some new looks: an acoustic guitar, some synth, upright piano, a little pedal steel wizardry from Tom Heyman, etc. It’s Cool Ghouls doing what they’ve always done, but in more ways and better.

Animal Races will be available on LP/CD (8/19) in the US via Empty Cellar Records and the EU/UK via Melodic Records; and also, on cassette via Burger Records. All versions feature full-color artwork painted by Shannon Shaw (Shannon and The Clams).

Cool Ghouls - Sundial

The track “The Dragon Year” is mixed and produced by Scottish musician and producer Howie B, who produced artists like: U2, Tricky and Bjork. Nonetheless, “The Dragon Year” is a Bjork style vocals soundtrack to an “Abstract Trip Hop meets Dark Ambient” melody. Extremely captivating tune.

Emanating from the heartland, Sat. Nite Duets make rock music that evokes the spirit and candor of the Midwest’s greatest outsiders. Imagine the heroism of GBV thrown against the self-reproach of the Violent Femmes and you're halfway there. Pepper on some of the depravity of Jimmy and Dennis Flemion and you’re basically in the homestretch. But there’s something else going on here too, something that has to do with how most of the members have played music together since middle school, how collectively they’ve probably listened to The Basement Tapes and Blue Album like 3 million times.

The new record is called Air Guitar, the latest full-length since Electric Manland did the worm across college radio in 2013. Composed in true and perfect form (erratically in a basement in Milwaukee), Air Guitar continues the democratic tradition established by One Nite Only in 2009 and Summer of Punishment in 2012. A labor of love and leisure, Air Guitar’s tracklist features songs by all six of the band’s regular members, not to mention contributions from a laundry of special guests (e.g. a cognitive musicologist, the bass player's dad, a mime).
