BUK THE SYSTEM is a compilation of experimental electronic music made in Pittsburgh, PA benefiting the Bukit Bail Fund. Comprising nineteen original tracks, the compilation is both a collective call from the participating artists to abolish policing and prisons, and a fundraising effort to aid Bukit Bail Fund’s ongoing work to support those incarcerated at Allegheny County Jail.
 
The Bukit Bail Fund of Pittsburgh was founded in honor of Frank “Bukit” Smart Jr., beloved brother, father of seven, and grandfather, who was needlessly killed at Allegheny County Jail when guards denied him medication and forcibly restrained him while he experienced a seizure.  He was detained pre-trial, and had not been convicted of any crime. We stand with the Bukit Bail Fund’s demand to end cash bail, pre-trial detention, and the entire prison-industrial complex.
 
All proceeds from the purchase of BUK THE SYSTEM will go to the Bukit Bail Fund of Pittsburgh.

Here's a lil description for today's prescription: 
this mix was recorded in early june 2021, a time when covid lockdown restrictions were easing and I was taking my first steps back into the communal world. i met with friends. we talked about quarantine; some parts were different, some were the same. mood swings were a universal constant. in quarantine i cried, i danced, i took depression naps, i experienced beauty, i learned how to be alone, then i forgot, i fell into a hole, i got out, i fell back in, i asked for help. all in the same day, usually. this mix intends to capture the mood swings that many of us experienced when left to our own devices, and ends with a snapshot of the manic fear/joy that many of us are experiencing as we accelerate into a social calendar once again. enjoy the ride <3

This mix is about Circadian rhythms. Exploring joy, making space for sacred rest, returning to the earth, dreaming of other futures. Through an apocalyptic time I’ve found a guiding constant in the change of seasons, budding and shedding of trees, rhythms of emotion. I’ve learned to empathize with myself, to feel each swing and jolt. To be honest about my rough edges, my caverns, my grief. To live openly, softly, without apology. This mix is a daydream about phases of the moon; ritual, routine, comfort, connection, whim, space. It’s about finding queer transcendence on the dance floor. Growing flowers. Communing with friends from afar through music. Curling up under a blanket to tune out the static. Making plans. Canceling plans. Staring into the abyss. As we come together again, we’re relearning how to find identity, and where to set boundaries. We can find strength and community in softness and openness. We can embrace and empathize with our lived experiences, our contradictions.

I hope this mix gives you a bit of space & time to appreciate and love yourself. Can’t wait to see you again on the dance floor someday soon 😊

WAX PLAY 004: GLADSTONE DELUXE

This month’s WAX PLAY features a 3hr mix from Encaustic co-founder Tabula Recta. Their selections build in tempo and intensity as the set progresses, paralleling the increase in stress, anxiety, and unrest we’ve experienced throughout the course of the pandemic. Here’s their message to you:

I want to use this space to highlight that black & queer artists are not only the pioneers of electronic music expression, but essential to the vitality of arts / culture across all domains. To recognize this, I ask that you donate to the Black Trans Femmes in the Arts Collective. 

The BTFA Collective aims to create an empowering community among Black trans and non-binary femmes and to address the systemic barriers that support their erasure. Founded in 2019 by Jordyn Jay, BTFA has created an uplifting, joyous space for Black trans women and non-binary femme artists to showcase their talent, advance their artistic careers, and explore the possibilities of their own creativity.

WAX PLAY 005: TABULA RECTA

For WAX PLAY 006, 𝐀𝐱𝐢𝐨𝐦'𝐬 𝘍𝘈𝘓𝘓 𝘊𝘏𝘐𝘓𝘋𝘙𝘌𝘕 mix has us running HOT as the nights grow colder. Igniting the crisp autumn air with heavy rhythms and EBM, she keeps us dancing til the warmth of the sun breaches the horizon.

This mix goes out to all my fellow fall children. There is something extra potent and special about the pure darkness that comes during fall nights that radiates within us. I definitely brought my Sag fire to the table and hope this sparks the fire within you.

My dream for this mix was to synergize hard techno with the post-punk industrial music from which it's derived. I've thrown a track or two into my sets over the years but this is the first time I've pushed myself to this level of mixing them. It's an audio experiment that tested out my ears and my feet, but I had so much fun when I pressed record that I kept going and going. I could've easily done two more hours if my dog didn't need to go out :p

I'll never forget the moment just over a decade ago when my friends first introduced me to techno. "𝘈𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘩, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵? 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰? 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭." Yep. "𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘬." Yep. "𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰?" This began my complete love affair with the genre, starting with minimal, which has since blossomed through layers of progressive, melodic, business, and hard techno. The energy and controlled chaos of industrial on both sides of the spectrum has always held a big place in my little cyborg heart and I was thrilled to express myself through it here. It is aggressive, cathartic, and powerful and I hope I captured that throughout.
