Sharing this recording because I had such a good time playing this set. It was my third time playing in a club. There were loads of faces in the crowd I knew, and I was playing in one of my favourite little spaces in Berlin, the downstair of Paloma bar. It was such a vibe getting there before anyone arrived and seeing it fill up so quickly. It felt like I was warming up a really fun house party. As much as I'd like to share something that is much more technically sound. There is something freeing about sharing something I wish was better. It's good practice to get over myself and my perfectionism. Whilst I'm here I have to shout out the team at N.O.N Music and Paloma. That night will stay with me forever. People were dancing on the window cils until the early hours.

Awkwardly Cast 063 / Ecki Pirates

DJ Slim Fit is a fervent producer and DJ, based in Bucharest, Romania. Driven by his 
perpetual curiosity, he boldly navigates through styles and tempos in his creations. His 
hyper-active nature translates into the energy and vibrations of his DJ mixes.  

His predilection for breakbeat rhythms, often heard in his tunes, comes from the early 
bassline driven UK sound of the ‘90s and the rave air of the same intense decade. His 
songs also cruise into a realm of dreamy and emotional melodies, born out of his 
reflective journeys into the depths of his soul and his life experiences.  

As his “poison” is spending every morning making music, he developed great acoustic 
skills, ruling with confidence the acoustic space in the process of creation of an 
electronic music track.  

DJ Slim Fit loves to make any frontiers dissapear into an exciting and euphoric cross
genre expedition in both production and the curation of the music to play for the 
dancefloor. 

Before switching to his present artist name, he produced and released music under the 
alias Pîrvu at labels like: NorthSouth Records, Meander, black.round.twelve, The 
Other Side etc. 

Alongside the singular act, DJ Slim Fit is collaborating with his wife, Alexandra, on the 
project entitled The Apricots. The duo plays and produces dancefloor-oriented music, 
but also slower beats like ambient, downtempo, jazz, trip-hop and experimental 
electronic music. Together they also curate their own mix and party series, Apricots’ Jam.

Ears Wide Open w/ Alexandra & DJ Slim Fit - 24th October 2024

This month's Get2kno is an ode to legendary record shop DnR Vinyl - the only garage specialist store still standing, which also happens to be in the small neighbourhood of Croydon where I grew up. Pretty much every DJ in the game has stepped through its doors since it opened back in the early 2000s to have a dig through the thousands of second hand oldskool gems and exclusive new releases collected by owners Dan n Rob since they were teenagers. 

I went down to the shop to chat to Dan about the origins of his music obsession and the importance of keeping small shops like his alive. We go back to his days as a 14 year old getting his mum to buy the latest vinyls from the prestigious Big Apple record store in Croydon 🍎, to his uni days where he spent every penny of his student loan on vinyl 💰, to the present day where small labels such as Elijah's 'Butterz' are a crucial support 🫂.

DnR is underground incarnate - fully DIY, no frills, no viral videos, just decades of unadulterated love and dedication to the music. The garage scene has never gone away despite its revival in recent years and the shop has helped preserve it from where it all began.

Dan doesn’t do interviews often so it was a real privilege to get to hear and share his stories. Anyone who’s listened to the show will able to tell that he’s an incredibly humble guy despite being deeply respected by everyone in the scene and one of the biggest oracles of music knowledge in the business. UKG legends Jeremy Sylvester, Lady Passion , Perception + Vibesey shared their personal stories: Dan goes above and beyond, helping start labels and pressing new releases as well as putting his all into the shop and website.

The interview clips are interwoven with a mix of entirely UKG - mostly oldskool - by me 🤓, including some tracks recommended by Dan himself 🔥. It’s kinda like podcast meets a mix 🤝.  Tracks by Tuff Jam, Damian C, Mike Millrain, Groove Chronicles, El-B, Eliza Rose, K-Lone and more.

Known for deep digging he’s released esteemed mixes for the likes of Dr Banana, Slapfunk, Cooking With Palms Trax, Dimensions Festival and Sex Tapes From Mars.
You can find almost 1200 tracks of rare, obscure and unknown music that he’s uploaded to his YouTube channel since 2015.
He’s produced music under numerous aliases released on Ba Tum Tish, Phone Traxx & his own eponymous label.
