Almost one year ago to the date, Buraka Som Sistema were called to perform on the first Boiler Room in their hometown of Lisbon. On the first 15 minutes of this now-legendary set (which you can still watch on Youtube) a new sound was introduced to the world. An intense, hypnotic and tropical-flavored 90 BPM beat got the crowd moving and Buraka’s sharply-dressed master of ceremonies Kalaf picked up the microphone - “We call it Zouk Bass”, he shouted. The crowd went wild and a new genre was officially born. 

Fast-forward one year into the present and Zouk Bass is now a worldwide phenomenon. From its origins as Antillean fast-paced party music - the word Zouk actually means party in the local creole - to being slowed-down and sensualized in Angola under the name Kizomba, to finally brought into the Global Club Music melting pot by Buraka Som Sistema, this sound has come a long way. 

Showcasing zouk maestros from all around the world, from USA’s JSTJR to Russia’s Insane Fennel, including Portugal’s DZC Deejays, the UK’s KJs, France’s Mala Noche and Buraka Som Sistema themselves - among many others - ‘We Call It Zouk Bass Volume I’ presents a truly global scene, united under the mission of making dance floors move a bit slower and a lot sexier.

Drawing inspiration from the thriving and psychedelic cumbia scene of the 70s, Filipe Salmon and Rafael Pereira have been fusing these traditional rhythms with modern techno beats, with a twist of Jamaican dancehall swagger and dub ambiance, creating a unique and mesmerizing sound in the process. Their amazing debut album 'La Alianza Profana' has wowed critics and listeners alike, which coupled with their surreal videos and audio-visual live shows has won them countless fans the world over, making them one of the most impressive new acts in the tropical electronica scene. 

In Lokumba they momentarily break away from the expected cumbia template and favor a choppy, bass-heavy hip-hop-influenced beat, splashed with haunting synths and their unmistakeable mystical vibe with a tropical flair. After bringing you cutting edge tropical sounds from established global bass artists like Buraka Som Sistema, Branko or Dengue Dengue Dengue!, it's time for the Upper Cuts series to bring you something completely new. And by new we mean really new. 

We were sitting in the office going through the mountain of promos in our inbox, when we found an email by a British producer named Castro. We opened it, not knowing what to expect, and what we found was Toot Toot, one of the most addictive zouk bass tunes we've heard since the whole craze started in the Boiler Room. We just had to have it here and now. 

Join us in welcoming Castro, a British producer whose background as a percussionist and love of ethnic rhythms gives his tracks a distinctive bounce, which he complements with an extensive knowledge of the dancefloor's demands. In the latest track on the Upper Cuts series, Castro pairs up heavy drums with vibrant synths and colorful melodies, all under the hypnotic 90bpm pace that Buraka helped to popularize, with some moombah elements and vocal samples thrown in for good measure. 

Besides having one of the most addictive beats we've heard in months, Castro's first single Toot Toot is one of those tracks that just inspires us to have a good time. Let's play this one loud and bring the fun back to the dancefloor.

After the zouk maestro JSTJR kickstarted the third Upper Cuts season with his slow winding beats, it's now time to pick up the pace with Estonia's foremost Global Club Music expert, the one and only Bert On Beats. 

Proving exactly how global this Global Club Music scene can get, this top-notch producer returns to Enchufada with the powerful Arriba, a bass-heavy track that sees the studio wizard blend UK bass music staples with all sorts of tropical dance floor heat. Heavy syncopated drums and roaring basslines draw inspiration from the London underground scene, as the layers of intricate percussion and contagious flute melodies create a hypnotic vibe with middle-eastern flavour that is bound to make hips sway across the world. 

Arriba points the Global Club Music series that is Upper Cuts in new and unexpected directions, while keeping the party vibes on a constant high. This tune marks Bert On Beats' return to the label, after dropping the powerful Bassy Baile on the Hard Ass Sessions EP series back in 2011.

Buraka founding member, Enchufada head honcho and Global Club Music champion Branko teams up with the Los Angeles-based producer Astronomar and the Melbourne-based Ugandan vocalist SK Simeon for his new cut Don't Touch That.
 
Unpredictable as he may be, the Lisbon producer has consistently delivered his own brand of highly-addictive and danceable tropical gems and his latest tune is no exception. Premiered live on his monthly residency on the renowned BBC Radio 1,Don't Touch That is the first taste of his forthcoming EP on Enchufada, the much-anticipated follow-up to his celebrated 'Time Out EP' and 'Drums, Slums & Hums' mixtape. 

As soon as you hit play you're hit with a hypnotic conga melody, sinuously twisting and turning as a dense triplet rhythm and a powerful beat urges dancers to gather on the floor, moving to the sound of this guaracha-inspired groove. SK Simeon's deep Jamaican-style flow gets warped and looped to contribute to the mesmerizing vibe of the track, as all manner of bleeps and interstellar synths join the party to create a powerful and uplifting club anthem.

The almighty Buraka Som Sistema join the Upper Cuts free download series on a mission to give the world yet another musical genre to dance to. The tropical downtempo madness of first 15 minutes of their now legendary Boiler Room set marked the introduction of Zouk Bass, a brand new tropical hybrid born from the meeting of the French Antillan rhythms of zouk - and its Lusophone relative kizomba - with the bass-heavy styles of the UK underground. 

Zouk Flute is the name of the track that brings the slow and sexy zouk rhythms to the 21st century clubs. A mischievous and downright hypnotic melody instantly puts you in the mood for dancing in dimly lit rooms, giving the style's tropical heritage a dangerous modern edge. While the charming synths reel you in, the heavy slow-paced beats and thick sub-bass pressure promise to keep you nailed to the dancefloor, ocasionally breaking the spell to ask the DJ for yet another rewind. 

As it happened all those years ago with the fast-paced Angolan rhythms of kuduro, yet another tropical revolution in electronic dance music can be traced back to Buraka Som Sistema's studio. While the beats radically change this time around, the need to make people dance their troubles away stays the same. Because dancing is always the best remedy, why not do it a bit slower?
