There are a few bands that will always make you remember where you were when you first listened to them. The Peruvian masked duo from Lima named Dengue Dengue Dengue is definitely one of those bands. The year was 2012 and Rafael Pereira and Felipe Salmon had just released their debut album ‘La Alianza Profana’, where their unique take on cumbia with dub and techno elements was presented to the world via stunning tracks like Simiolo, and complemented by a vibrant, colorful and psychedelic aesthetic on their videos and live visuals. We were instantly hooked. 

From then on, we knew we had to have Dengue Dengue Dengue on the Enchufada catalog. Fast-forward to the present and the boys have turned in an incredible six-track EP called ‘Serpiente Dorada’, which sees their unique and unmistakable sound develop and grow even further. While the relentless and hypnotic cumbia is still at the core of their sound – as the title-track Serpiente Dorada proudly displays – one can also hear as zouk bass slowly enters the melting pot of influences on Banana or Bugutu, while still managing to sound like no one else. The Jamaican sounds of dub, reggae and dancehall weigh heavily over the whole EP, but it’s in Booom that they make themselves more noticeable, while Rama sees the Peruvian duo leave their comfort zone and experiment with 120BPM beats. Finally, Senen Pani provides the perfect EP closer in the form of a dreamy, rhythmically-charged psychedelic lullaby. 

Perfectly translating the band’s approach to club music, ‘Serpiente Dorada’ is an infectious and colorful mixture of global sounds, as genres are used as a starting point on their ongoing search for the perfect hybrid beat, where the total is more than the sum of its parts.

Icelandic teenage wunderkind Samaris’ first UK release comes in the shape of an eponymously-titled album on 29th July. Samaris compiles their two Icelandic-released EPs, Hljóma Þú (2011) and Stofnar falla (recorded at Sigur Rós’ Sundlaugin studio with Gunnar Tynes of múm, 2012.

Combining disparate elements of electronics (Þórður Kári Steinþórsson), clarinet (Áslaug Rún Magnúsdóttir) and Jófríður Ákadóttir’s haunting voice, Samaris mix glacial electronica and bold, percussive beats with haunting chant-like vocals - the lyrics culled from nineteenth century Icelandic poems. Viltu Vitrast for example retells an Icelandic folk tale about villages who ask for help from a supernal being, but worry it will choose not to manifest its power on Earth. The effect is simultaneously ancient and modern – an ethereal sound filled with dark spaces and alien atmosphere. 

Formed in 2011 in Reykjavik, within months Samaris had won both the Icelandic Músíktilraunir (past winners include the likes of Of Monsters and Men) and Kraumur Award. The band’s show at Iceland Airwaves in 2012, attracted the attention of Line Of Best Fit, Drowned In Sound and NPR amongst many others. Singer Jófríður also performs with her sister Ásthildur in the more folk-inclined Pascal Pinion.

2014 is finally here and that means the Upper Cuts series is now officially one year old. After two seasons have passed and 20 tracks of great global club music sounds from all around the world have been released, it's time to keep raising the bar as a whole new season starts. 

For the first track of the Upper Cuts Season 3 we teamed up with one of the most promising young producers to arrive to the zouk bass scene: the one and only JSTJR (pronounced 'gesture'). The energetic beatmaker's distinct style fuses influences from all kinds of tropical-flavored genres, such as dancehall, jungle, moombah or even trap, making him one of the most unpredictable yet consistent artists of this developing scene. 

His latest creation - Panamania feat. Ma-Less - is a zouk bass banger if we ever heard one. Pounding drums and thick basslines provide the backbone for sexy, winding and hypnotic vocal samples to do their magic on the dance floor, while spaced-out synths proceed to make bodies bend and twist in all kinds of new shapes. 

Panamania feat. Ma-Less also serves as a powerful introduction to Enchufada's upcoming zouk bass compilation, scheduled to be dropping this February. 'We Call It Zouk Bass Volume I' will feature this and many other tracks by some of the artists that are (and have been) defining this exciting new genre since the very beginning. Almost one year ago to the date, Buraka Som Sistema were called to perform on the first Boiler Room in their hometown of Lisbon. On the first 15 minutes of this now-legendary set (which you can still watch on Youtube) a new sound was introduced to the world. An intense, hypnotic and tropical-flavored 90 BPM beat got the crowd moving and Buraka’s sharply-dressed master of ceremonies Kalaf picked up the microphone - “We call it Zouk Bass”, he shouted. The crowd went wild and a new genre was officially born. 

Fast-forward one year into the present and Zouk Bass is now a worldwide phenomenon. From its origins as Antillean fast-paced party music - the word Zouk actually means party in the local creole - to being slowed-down and sensualized in Angola under the name Kizomba, to finally brought into the Global Club Music melting pot by Buraka Som Sistema, this sound has come a long way.

The almighty Buraka Som Sistema join the Upper Cuts free download series on a mission to give the world yet another musical genre to dance to. As it happened all those years ago with the fast-paced Angolan rhythms of kuduro, yet another tropical revolution in electronic dance music can be traced back to Buraka Som Sistema's studio.
