There are a few bands that will always make you remember where you were when you first listened to them. The Peruvian masked duo from Lima named Dengue Dengue Dengue is definitely one of those bands. The year was 2012 and Rafael Pereira and Felipe Salmon had just released their debut album ‘La Alianza Profana’, where their unique take on cumbia with dub and techno elements was presented to the world via stunning tracks like Simiolo, and complemented by a vibrant, colorful and psychedelic aesthetic on their videos and live visuals. We were instantly hooked. 

From then on, we knew we had to have Dengue Dengue Dengue on the Enchufada catalog. Fast-forward to the present and the boys have turned in an incredible six-track EP called ‘Serpiente Dorada’, which sees their unique and unmistakable sound develop and grow even further. While the relentless and hypnotic cumbia is still at the core of their sound – as the title-track Serpiente Dorada proudly displays – one can also hear as zouk bass slowly enters the melting pot of influences on Banana or Bugutu, while still managing to sound like no one else. The Jamaican sounds of dub, reggae and dancehall weigh heavily over the whole EP, but it’s in Booom that they make themselves more noticeable, while Rama sees the Peruvian duo leave their comfort zone and experiment with 120BPM beats. Finally, Senen Pani provides the perfect EP closer in the form of a dreamy, rhythmically-charged psychedelic lullaby. 

Perfectly translating the band’s approach to club music, ‘Serpiente Dorada’ is an infectious and colorful mixture of global sounds, as genres are used as a starting point on their ongoing search for the perfect hybrid beat, where the total is more than the sum of its parts.

Almost one year ago to the date, Buraka Som Sistema were called to perform on the first Boiler Room in their hometown of Lisbon. On the first 15 minutes of this now-legendary set (which you can still watch on Youtube) a new sound was introduced to the world. An intense, hypnotic and tropical-flavored 90 BPM beat got the crowd moving and Buraka’s sharply-dressed master of ceremonies Kalaf picked up the microphone - “We call it Zouk Bass”, he shouted. The crowd went wild and a new genre was officially born. 

Fast-forward one year into the present and Zouk Bass is now a worldwide phenomenon. From its origins as Antillean fast-paced party music - the word Zouk actually means party in the local creole - to being slowed-down and sensualized in Angola under the name Kizomba, to finally brought into the Global Club Music melting pot by Buraka Som Sistema, this sound has come a long way. 

Showcasing zouk maestros from all around the world, from USA’s JSTJR to Russia’s Insane Fennel, including Portugal’s DZC Deejays, the UK’s KJs, France’s Mala Noche and Buraka Som Sistema themselves - among many others - ‘We Call It Zouk Bass Volume I’ presents a truly global scene, united under the mission of making dance floors move a bit slower and a lot sexier.

Brussels-based DJ and producer Max le Daron's love for tropical-flavoured bass music goes way deeper than most. After spending the last few years exploring the global side of UK bass culture, including everything between dancehall to 2-step garage, it was the Ghanian sounds of Azonto that recently captured the Belgian artist's imagination. 

For those of you who still haven't caught up with Azonto (also known as Afrobeats in its current breeding grounds of London) it began as the young members of Britain's Ghanian and Nigerian communities - who grew up on a steady diet of grime, UK funky and the electronic sounds of the London club scene - began channeling the musical traditions of hiplife and afrobeat in their own productions. The result was a vibrant and colorful mix of rhythms and melodies inherited from their parents' generation, recreated for London's modern, bass-hungry club scene. 

Max le Daron became instantly enamoured with these incredibly fun and danceable rhythms. Instead of just recreating the vibe at his Brussels studio, he flew to Accra to meet and record with local musicians, drawing inspiration from the local scene to create energetic tracks such as the new Upper Cuts track Gulder Riddim. Intricate afro-inspired beats twist and turn to support a bouncy bassline, as the chopped-up vocals and uplifting chords provide the finishing touches for this club-ready tropical banger.
