If there’s one thing we like is creating a relationship with the artists who make the music we love to hear and release. Cardiff-based artist Castro is one of the best examples of this, as the young producer and percussionist sent us an email back in 2013 with a single demo and a request that we listened to it. We listened – and boy, are we glad we did – and ended up releasing it as Toot Toot on the Upper Cuts free downloads series. It was, and still is, one of the weirdest and most captivating zouk bass tracks we’ve heard so far, and it provided the foundation on which we kept building, eventually releasing the 2-track EP ‘Bipolar’ which he now follows-up with his proper debut EP ‘The Subtle Approach’, making the journey from unknown bedroom producer to promising young artist in a heartbeat. 

If his unpredictable takes on zouk bass were the starting point of our relationship with Castro, now there’s a whole lot more happening inside Owen Sheppard’s studio. The slow cadence of these modern kizomba offshoots and moombah hybrids naturally attracted the young percussionist’s attention, but as he grows as an artist he proceeds to fully dive into the Global Club Music world to tackle all sorts of rhythms and influences. However, as much as they have evolved since then, intricately-constructed beats, colorful melodies and a healthy mix of humour and sensitivity – all of it infused with that tropical aroma – are still very much at the heart of Castro’s tracks.

The Subtle Approach is the definitive introduction to Castro’s own sonic universe, where a profound understanding of genres and scenes like Zouk Bass, Moombah, UK Funky or Bass Music provides him with the foundation to build a hybrid sound that manages to touch on these influences while becoming something unique. From the breezy EP opener Cobwebs’ entrancing steel drums melodies to the vibrant and cheerful dancefloor-focused collaboration with Amsterdam-based vocalist Zanillya on Ring Ring, the frantic percussive energy of Let Me Go or Bam Bam’s weird looping vocal samples, the producer’s debut EP is a true sonic rollercoaster that proudly showcases some of the best things that can be found inside the Global Club Music scene.

Dengue Dengue Dengue (@Dengue) have an enviable ability to whisk together the traditional and electronic. Their debut LP La Alianza Profana was a stellar example of just that - a cumbia-cum-electronica joyride dip-dyed in all the right amounts of psychedelia and mystique. 2014's follow up project, Serpiente Dorada EP was no less of a trip. And now with July 2015 here, the Peruvian pair are providing a sneak peek at their next move. "Murdah" is four minutes of footwork-paced hysteria that showcases a step up in tempo. Unrelenting drum pounds, a percussive tribal backbone and rapid-fire vocal chops become locked in an aural bull-fight that's both infectious and dancefloor-ready.

Lisbon-based DJ and producer, Enchufada label head, Red Bull Music Academy alumnus and Buraka Som Sistema co-founder Branko is ready to embark on a whole new adventure. The renowned multifaceted artist went on a sonic journey around the world to connect with some of the most exciting music scenes our there, meeting and collaborating with a new generation of artists to create his debut solo album ‘Atlas’ (out on September 4th). After giving listeners a first taste of his exciting new work with Eventually, the globetrotting producer now invites you to listen to the new track Let Me Go (feat. If Eventually paired up compelling global club rhythms with indie vocals, Let Me Go (feat. Nonku Phiri & Mr. Carmack) further expands on this dynamic by allowing Branko’s trademark pop sensibilities to shine through his dancefloor-ready beats. After spending the day with the talented South African singer Nonku Phiri and L.A.-based producer Mr. Carmack at the Red Bull Studios in Cape Town, South Africa, Branko set out to translate this encounter into a song by pushing the limits of the kizomba offshoot we call zouk bass, introducing some much-needed R&B flavor to this thriving genre.
 
The story of this encounter is translated into an instrumental that reveals lush and dreamy synths dancing around a shuffling 90 BPM beat with an organic feel, built on Branko’s wide-ranging global influences and Mr. Carmack’s unique beatmaking skills, to which Nonku Phiri’s captivating Venda and English vocals add a level of depth and emotion that is further complemented by a bittersweet string arrangement (recorded at Red Bull Studios in New York) - with positively epic results.

The almighty Buraka Som Sistema join the Upper Cuts free download series on a mission to give the world yet another musical genre to dance to. The tropical downtempo madness of first 15 minutes of their now legendary Boiler Room set marked the introduction of Zouk Bass, a brand new tropical hybrid born from the meeting of the French Antillan rhythms of zouk - and its Lusophone relative kizomba - with the bass-heavy styles of the UK underground. 

Zouk Flute is the name of the track that brings the slow and sexy zouk rhythms to the 21st century clubs. A mischievous and downright hypnotic melody instantly puts you in the mood for dancing in dimly lit rooms, giving the style's tropical heritage a dangerous modern edge. While the charming synths reel you in, the heavy slow-paced beats and thick sub-bass pressure promise to keep you nailed to the dancefloor, ocasionally breaking the spell to ask the DJ for yet another rewind. 

As it happened all those years ago with the fast-paced Angolan rhythms of kuduro, yet another tropical revolution in electronic dance music can be traced back to Buraka Som Sistema's studio. While the beats radically change this time around, the need to make people dance their troubles away stays the same. Because dancing is always the best remedy, why not do it a bit slower?
