Hidden-by-the-Wall is a new soundwork by :zoviet*france: commissioned by Green Croft Arts as part of its Collision and Conflict project.

Collision and Conflict is a GPS-triggered geolocated sound walk, presented through the Echoes phone app, that follows a circular route between Walltown and Green Croft in Northumberland, UK. The route runs alongside and close by Hadrian's Wall, a vast Roman defensive fortification that runs east/west across northern England, marking the northwestern frontier of the Roman empire. While following the route, walkers can listen to each of the 14 new music, sound and spoken word Collision and Conflict compositions at the locations to which they've been allocated along the way. Hidden-by-the-Wall can be found along a stretch of open country between Walltown and Thirlwall, a high point from which the distant Scottish borders to the north and the North Pennines to the south can be seen.

In devising Hidden-by-the-Wall we set out to capture hidden and unnoticed sounds in the vicinity and recreate lost sounds that would have been heard decades ago but have now gone forever. The original field recordings that form the hidden and unnoticed sounds are here in this playlist. More about each track can be found in the description on its page.

My father's hometown is an area with a lot of snow, and I spent some time there in the winter when I was a child.
It was then that I first experienced the feeling of silence when it snowed.

That sense of silence as I walked through the falling snow may have been the catalyst for my current work in ambient music.

This music is dedicated to those snowy, beloved winter nights.

Darwin Grosse debuts on One Instrument with the album “Fresco”, solely created on the Korg ARP 2600 FS, a remake of the classic semi-modular synth of the 70’s. He states that he loves the ARP 2600 not for its complexity, but for the purity of its sound, and this can very well be heard in this wonderful dreamy ambient electronica release.

All of the tracks were created using a hand-written script on the monome norns hardware device and were recorded in a single session, with errors and recorder glitches embraced as part of the performance.

Each track reveals Darwin’s harmonic and melodic sensibilities, his love of lush reverb and passion for the beautiful tone of the Korg Arp 2600.

“Fresco” is an elegant undertaking to be listened to from beginning to end. The 8-part, 30 minute work is an ideal example of how warm minimalism and thick melodic soundscapes are combined, becoming a graceful richly textured trip.

the day I recorded this I heard the entire transcript of the final communication on the iPhone of the Russian soldier 
shortly before he was killed, telling his mother that he is not In Crimea on exercises but in Ukraine where the Russian forces where bombing several cities and that Ukrainian were throwing themselves under the wheels of their caravans and tanks, where he said he was scared and that it was horrible that they were being called fascists
and that their leaders told them the Ukrainians are going to welcome us -- and then he was killed -- and what are we to do -- does anybody read these comments? who knows... I post this with hope and yet sadness, almost speechless at times, weary of watching news reports and scanning shortwave bands, trying to imagine how I might be of service to anyone, trying not to worry, failing, getting angry at how ignorant and monstrous are those who deliberately continue on the war path and also wondering who is listening? who reads these words even? for 10 years or more I have been here in the social media, doing my work as a musician and seeing that my posts are ignored and that I am here with some thousand or more "friends" who are silent, unfriendly, ignoring or ostracizing me, believing that I exist only to fill up their fan base.  I always will remember the days when you all understood we were freaks, we had no chance for the mainstream, and we needed mutual support from one another.
