hey folks! here I bring you another piece I made using my drum kit "the elements: fire edition" this time in the form of a song I call "jealous". this one has been a WIP for months but I finally got round to finishing it and i'm happy with it :). fun fact, if anybody here has been following me since like 2014 or so you'll know i've used the 'devdas' sample before on a song called "possession", think of this as the 2016 revamp! hope you guys enjoy.

This is a demo recording of a live setup, with no post-processing. The set is created live, on the spot, using material assembled beforehand in Ableton Live. I use the Native Instrument S8 controller with two Stem decks and two Remix Decks. Each stem deck has four tracks, each of which is split into eight loops. The remix sets contribute one shot elements and some atmospheric loops, Vox and FX. There is a basic structure but all elements are put together live in the moment. With four decks and 4x8 loops on each, times 9 parts (each around 4.5 minutes), I ensure that no set will ever be identical to another. This includes all effects and transitional elements that are realised on the spot. The goal was to create a live setup using Native Instruments new Stems format (here modified to have stem loops). Note that this is the very first rough recording that serves as a demo for a live performance. Most material I used comes from Engineering Samples, although I noticed listening to it afterwards that in the action, a few elements from Moderat sneeked it. This is what happens with live jams, you never know where you go. Love the concept.

With a trail of club-worn bodies left in his wake since his debut Lobster Theremin EP, closely followed by huge slabs for Shall Not Fade and Unknown To The Unknown, TRP joins the Mörk clan with four tough and ethereal modern classics in his crunchy house-techno hybrid production style.

The heavily swung, skippy & raw peak timer, The Future, hammers into view with scorched drum-lines rioting over a dystopian city-wide call from a tyrant mayor and minor 7th diving pads. Full lockdown in 2017.

The A-side eases off with the deeper, tender cut Raindrop Shape. Infused with a sweeter, softer touch of synth hand. Slowly directing small objects and ducks along the surface of the bath, bubbles popping and latching to the flotsam, toes tickling the end of the tap. A day-dreamers delight.

Another TRP archive dig comes forth in the shape of M7. A fictional motorway drive-time cut. Empty 4am lanes, fog lights, tape decks and in-car smoking. One for French airport transfers in small hatchbacks laced with an edge of post-club insomnia.

Closing out the whole is dusty, organic drum-banger Highjacked. Coming on in two layers - low-passed drum rumblings and twinkling, wandering proto-keys - and rolling upwards and outwards into a beaming, acid-grumbling floor-botherer. Knackered, rough and way-too-long-after-closing house music for lock-ins.

Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds reissues and revives his debut album in form of a special remastered 10th Anniversary edition titled Eulogy For Evolution 2017 — available worldwide via Erased Tapes on August 25th. 

Following its initial release in 2007 and coinciding with Ólafur’s 30th birthday, label founder Robert Raths gifted the chance for this record to shine a second time. 

'Eulogy For Evolution' is a journey from birth to death, transporting the listener through life itself. Originally written as a teenager, the record has now been restored with the help of his friends, remixed by Ólafur himself and remastered by Nils Frahm. The cover art was redesigned and enhanced by Torsten Posselt at FELD using the original photographs taken by Stuart Bailes during a trip to Ólafur’s home in Iceland in 2007.

To experience the record in the present day is not only to experience the past, but also the sheer timelessness and relevance of these compositions, and the ambition Ólafur has had from the very beginning. “Fast forward 10 years, our relationships and knowledge in sound have matured, but you can still hear this urgency in Óli’s songs that caught my ears to begin with”, states Robert Raths.

Words from Ólafur, June 2017:

 “I spent a couple of weeks in some sort of a time machine, opening up and working on 12-year-old recordings. There was noise in the microphones, some channels seemed accidentally muted, but sometimes I found myself admiring what my teenage self was capable of. It was somehow charming. Well, most of it. So I fixed the stuff that wasn’t before sending it off to Nils Frahm for remastering. 

It was an ambitious outing. When I was 18 my uncle passed away from cancer. It was the first time I had experienced the passing of someone close to me, so I dedicated my work to him. Around the same time his first grandchild was born, and was named after him. I was inspired by the joy and positivity he brought, and saw that somehow life was extended after our death. So I set out to create a solid piece of music that would take us through the circle of life. 

This work by a highly emotional teenager has been revived, matured and, I hope you’ll agree, improved by some of my favourite people in this world. I’m grateful to see it get another chance to shine and I hope you will enjoy this journey to the past.”
