'Temporal Parallax' ... expanding expressive dimensions in auditory spacetime.

TEMPORAL in the sense of auditory phenomena and perception.
PARALLAX - a difference in aural 'appearance' depending on the observer's perceptual position (perspective shift). 

A musical endeavor to present increasingly complex auditory multidimensionality to the receptive mind. An evolution in musical consciousness.  

A composition intended to facilitate an expanding perception of the dynamic interrelationships and interplay of micropitches and extended harmonics. All expressed as evolving aural 'shapes', 'textures' and complex emotional 'colors'.

Metaphorically, listen for a 3-D to 2-D aural 'collapse' and distinct dimensional contrast between final resolving chords.

An insight based on an analogy to the evolution of visual intelligence, within the context of painting conception/perception from flat 2-D representation to 3-D perspective. A long neglected development in aural intelligence within our visually dominant culture.

Looking forward to a future possibility of capturing increasingly sophisticated polychromatic and extended harmonic (overtones) 'shapes/colors' as digital 'audio resolution' encoding/decoding technology improves in recording and audio compression formats. And also, to the possibility of rudimentary visual rendering of these dynamic multidimensional aspects of auditory perception.

Samhain, (pronounced SOW-in, SAH-vin, or SAM-hayne) means "End of Summer", and is the third and final Harvest. The dark winter half of the year commences on this Sabbat. 

It is generally celebrated on October 31st, but some traditions prefer November 1st. It is one of the two "spirit-nights" each year, the other being Beltane. It is a magical interval when the mundane laws of time and space are temporarily suspended, and the Thin Veil between the worlds is lifted. Communicating with ancestors and departed loved ones is easy at this time, for they journey through this world on their way to the Summerlands. It is a time to study the Dark Mysteries and honor the Dark Mother and the Dark Father, symbolized by the Crone and her aged Consort.

I grew up playing video games. I still play them today, but when I was a kid my favourite system was the Sega Mega Drive. One thing that always brings me back to those simple times is hearing the sound of the Mega Drive’s FM synth. It has a characteristic grating and bright sound that I just love.

I bought a VST instrument called FMDrive which quite faithfully reproduces the sound of the original Mega Drive sound chip. The only problem was that it couldn’t be microtuned.

I wrote a couple of emails to the developer, Aly James, and he sent me a custom build of his synth with support for microtonal equal-tempered scales. The first thing I did was make this track in 10-EDO.

It’s my first time using 10-EDO. I tried to focus on using it like a warped diatonic scale instead of two interlocking 5-EDO scales, but you can hear both approaches used.

Virtutues Occultae is an album in eighteen sections for six physically modeled virtual pianos, each with a unique tuning in an extended 11-limit just intonation.

In writing this music I used a mixture of traditional composition methods of structuring the music with various harmonies and progressions along with more free writing, collage techniques, and algorithmic composition.

The tuning of the virtual pianos extends Harry Partch’s conception of the over-tonality.

A collection of electronic generative tracks created from various micro-tunings. This was a real joy to make, composing these tracks has felt like learning the rules and laws of music again from scratch, as everything you know about conventional 12-TET harmony goes out of the window.

Uses mostly the scale of 18-21-5-13-18-3-5-13 steps in 96edo. The temperament system is known as Porcupine; fifths and minor thirds are tuned wide, and fourth is divided evenly into three steps.
