Microtonal

Three short fiddlings in three rank-2 temperaments (Maqamic, Bleu, Supra) in 17-tone equal temperament, on a DIY oil-can ukulele. Recorded with a Jez riley French contact mic and Rode NT1, processed (dynamics, reverb, EQ) in Reaper.

17edo Uke Maqamic

An Ebow (brand name for "Electric Bow" or "Energy Bow") is a small, handheld electronic device.  Normally used on guitar, these battery powered devices create an electromagnetic field that causes strings to vibrate.  When placed on the strings inside of a piano, they create a sound reminiscent of a sustained sine tone, yet can be used to create a variety of audio effects when multiple Ebows are triggering different frequencies.  

Deviations is to be performed with six Ebows color-coded red, orange, pink, green, blue, and purple.  The color of each e-bow corresponds to the color of each note on the score.  Ebows should be placed on the strings of the piano within 10 inches of the hammers.  The performer should use the fundamental setting on each Ebow, however if the tone is not being produced adequately, the harmonic setting can also be utilized.  Black notes should be played by plucking the strings inside the piano.  The tempo on the black notes is relative to the pace the performer chooses.

Enharmonic Tune for Kantele

Samhain, (pronounced SOW-in, SAH-vin, or SAM-hayne) means "End of Summer", and is the third and final Harvest. The dark winter half of the year commences on this Sabbat. 

It is generally celebrated on October 31st, but some traditions prefer November 1st. It is one of the two "spirit-nights" each year, the other being Beltane. It is a magical interval when the mundane laws of time and space are temporarily suspended, and the Thin Veil between the worlds is lifted. Communicating with ancestors and departed loved ones is easy at this time, for they journey through this world on their way to the Summerlands. It is a time to study the Dark Mysteries and honor the Dark Mother and the Dark Father, symbolized by the Crone and her aged Consort.

Virtutues Occultae is an album in eighteen sections for six physically modeled virtual pianos, each with a unique tuning in an extended 11-limit just intonation.

In writing this music I used a mixture of traditional composition methods of structuring the music with various harmonies and progressions along with more free writing, collage techniques, and algorithmic composition.

The tuning of the virtual pianos extends Harry Partch’s conception of the over-tonality.

Kaiho ('Saudade') for Carrillo Piano (upright piano with 97 keys, one octave divided into 96 equal steps). First performance at the Muziekgebouw aan t'IJ, Amsterdam, Feb 25, 2018. Ere Lievonen, pianist.
Uses mostly the scale of 18-21-5-13-18-3-5-13 steps in 96edo. The temperament system is known as Porcupine; fifths and minor thirds are tuned wide, and fourth is divided evenly into three steps.
