From playing various instruments with Ausecuma Beats, Emma Volard and The Belair Lip Bombs, Liam de Bruin steps into the producer's chair. In this solo guise, he joins Melbourne's buzzing live jazz/house scene which has given us Close Counters, Horatio Luna, Teymori, 30/70, Harvey Sutherland and Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange, many of them among Liam's early supporters. It took just two early tracks for the word to spread worldwide, with Liam gathering praise and plays from Art of Tones, Osunlade, Jimpster, Gilles Peterson, Mousse T, Jazztronik, Red Rack'em, Bandcamp Weekly, Delfonic, KCRW, Trax Mag, NTS, Tru Thoughts and Apple Music.

New single 'Isolation' takes a ride on the organic and jazzy side of deep house. Liam plays live drums, percussion, bass and keys for this one, recorded during lockdown in his garage studio in the beachside suburb Frankston, which has had a surprisingly significant role to play in the evolution of Melbourne dance music (Carl Cox, Butter Sessions, Andy Van, 21st Century Dance Club, etc). Also included are the slinky late night groove 'Lavender' and the disco funk 'Friday Evening' which also features guitar by ... Liam de Bruin! All tracks are featured on the forthcoming 'Thinking By Dancing' EP, with three additional tracks including a remix from Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange. A small number of copies of the limited vinyl will include a die-cut felt cover with embroidered Heard and Felt logo tag.

A remix of an amazing 60s Czech version of the Ray Bryant classic. From 'Cosmic Sounds Remixed' which also featured remixes from Nicola Conte and Panoptikum. Keyboard magic courtesy of Colin Hopkins. This one got played on Gilles Peterson's show and featured in the best of the year for one of my favourite radio shows, Jason Palma's 'Higher Ground' in Toronto.

Karel Velebny & SHQ - Cubano Chant (Ennio Styles Remix)

Tempo changing DJ tool and tribute to the likes of Tito Puente who since the 50s have done these great tunes with a hypnotic bassline and not much more as the backdrop to some all-out percussion solos. Melbourne's Elvis Aljus (from Gypsy Brown) kills it on timbales and other assorted percussion, right up to drum & bass tempo.

My first collab with the super-talented Cy Gorman. We took the latin jazz original, added more samples plundered from the Los Charly's/Imagenes Records back catalogue and built layers of synths on top. We started out kind-of influenced by footwork, trap and G-funk, but I'm not quite sure what we've ended up with! Out May 5th 2014 alongside remixes from Al Kent, Pete Herbert and Renegades of Jazz.

Los Charly's Orchestra - Rediscovering The Big Apple (Cy Gorman & Ennio Styles Remix)

Loved the housier original with great male/female vox from Roberto Rossi & Silvia Donati. I couldn't resist taking this into samba funk territory, inspired by Brasilian 70s artists like Antonio Carlos & Jocafi. Bruce Sandell plays flute much better than me. This remix was big with folks like Quantic and Rainer Trüby.

Belladonna - Ebatulé (Ennio Styles' Samba Funk Remix)

Rework of a crazy 1978 fusion piece by Martinican keyboard maestro Marius Cultier. The crazy keyboards in my version are courtesy of the ridiculously talented Will Poskitt (RIP). This came out on Counterpoint's 'Version Excursion' album (and the 12" sampler). Laurent Garnier, Spiritual South, Mad Mats and Rob Luis were into this one. 

Ennio Styles - Zouk

It was an amazing honour to be asked to remix this 1968 soul classic, and to even be given the original 8-track parts to work from. I did this with my Local People crew Lanu, Grantham Clayford and Benjamin Tobias. An edited version is on the Japan-only compilation 'Soul Source Remixed Fevers' alongside remixes of other classics by Danny Krivit, Dimitri from Paris and Joey Negro. This full version is twice as long and was only on the vinyl 'Soul Source Remixed Fevers EP Pt 2'.

Barbara Acklin - Am I the Same Girl (Local People 12" Remix)

One of two remixes I did of this tune for Far Out. The other version was more of a straight up house take. When I heard Claudemir de Silva's amazing vocals on the original I knew this was the tune I had to remix. Co-written by the legendary Ivan Conti of Azymuth. This one caught the ears of Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge and DJ Magazine.

Snitch was one of my favourite tunes from @jordan-rakei's debut album on Brisbane label @soulhasnotempo. Sweet rhodes, live hip hop drums and a verse from Remi framed Jordan's voice perfectly. But before he had even given the tune a title, Jordan came into Stylin' with only a guitar found at short notice. This acoustic version exposes the purity of the song and Jordan's talent. Jordan has now left Brisbane for London, and with @ninja-tune releasing his new album Wallflower soon, it's been quite a ride. There are a couple of singles you can check now, and as usual lots of recent collabs including for drummer @richardspaven's new album (also on @soulhasnotempo).

We reached out to our man Kaye in Singapore, one of the heads behind the Darker than Wax label/collective alongside Funk Bast*rd. Kaye chose to rework 'Does Nothing End', featuring the earthy tones of Paris-based US soulstress Krystle Warren. Kaye took the midtempo orchestral song based around a Brazilian maracatu rhythm and turned out a soulful house groover, adding warm synth bass, subtle percussion and big chords while keeping Krystle's vocals and Doug de Vries' cavaquinho strumming in place. One for fans of organic/electronic house sounds like Osunlade, Ananda Project and the King Street/Nite Grooves labels. Also check out Kaye's dope new Bobby McFerrin edits.

With his aliases and collaborative projects JXTPS, Juxtpose, Sjazd and JDJX, Wu Kush has had releases on Suara, Planet Rhythm, Momentary and more, joining alumni such as Prins Thomas, James Welsh, Harvey Sutherland, Kirk Degiorgio, Matrixxman, Booka Shade, Vince Watson, DJ Hell and Catz n Dogz.

He saves his funkiest grooves for Heard and Felt, using the Wu Kush moniker to explore house, Detroit techno, electro funk and broken rhythms. Title track 'Xenomorph' drops big techno chords over layers of afro percussion and chants. 'Rolling Devastation' is spacey tech-funk with a house legend coming to jack. The fourth track is 'Third' which could be what a Martyn remix of Kraftwerk might sound like.

The remix of 'Xenomorph' comes from London duo Modified Man (AKA Scrimshire and Deoke), whose remix credits include Amp Fiddler and Dele Sosimi. They reshape the groove with mellow broken beats and warm synths, then bump things up with a surprise house twist late in the piece.

An ultra limited pressing of 30 lathe cut hand-stamped clear 10”s will each include a hand-sprayed felt sleeve insert (each a different colour) featuring the stencilled pyramid design.

The launch party for the Xenomorph EP happens Sunday 5 August at Dr Morse with Wu Kush joined by Ben Houghton (Momentary Recordings), Emelyne (The Blend PBS) and Ennio Styles (Heard and Felt/3RRR/Worldwide FM).

This second single from the EP takes a more relaxed approach, with Jonny's smoky boom bap beats providing the perfect backdrop for upcoming US MC Lady K. Jonny was totally charmed on hearing a single track on her Soundcloud page, and here her jazzy, gentle flow — part rapped, part sung — comes off like a cross between Noname and Vinia Mojica (Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, De La Soul, DJ Spinna, DJ Medhi, etc).

With music from Jonny Faith's recent Night Lights EP appearing in Grand Theft Auto and best of 2020 lists including Gilles Peterson's, you might think Jonny would continue to mine his take of hip hop and broken beat. Well, all in good time. He's been ready to enter the jungle for 20 years, and he's not waiting any longer.

Now based in Melbourne, Jonny first got involved in music in Edinburgh as a DJ and turntablist in the 90s. He got hooked on jungle and drum & bass in those days from hearing DJ Hype spinning in Newcastle, seeing the Roni Size/Reprazent live show with two drummers and hanging out at cult Edinburgh club night Manga, where residents G-Mac and DJ Kid hosted the likes of Marky, Grooverider and J Majik.

Jonny was keen to start making his own sounds, signing up for an electronic music production course. But the course seemed to be more house-oriented. Sampling was not on the curriculum, and the students weren't allowed to touch the Akai S900, the sampler used in many classic early jungle/D&B tunes. When Jonny did start releasing his own productions in the mid-00s, he was starting to explore the experimental hip hop beat scene at the same time Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke (another Scottish turntablist) were also getting started.

Jonny continued to widen his sonic palette, adding elements of dub, jazz, funk, electronica and broken beat, and picking up fans like Radio Nova Paris, KCRW, Vice and Clash Magazine along the way. But he's never been more than one degree of separation from his jungle/D&B roots. He has continued to buy and play the music, done the odd D&B remix and snuck sonic elements and techniques into his tracks at various tempos. Over the years his releases have shared labels with the likes of Peshay, Om Unit, Drumagick, Reso, Kid Drama and Danny Scrilla.

Now, more than 20 years after those early experiences in Edinburgh, Jonny unveils his first jungle/D&B EP, On Lock. And it sounds like he's been making this music the whole time. In a way, he has.

The single 'Open My Eyes' bursts out the gate, chopping not only the breaks but also the soul for a tune that sounds like Amerie's '1 Thing' reimagined for the 174 BPM crew. We've heard hip hop maestro Just Blaze making house (and it rocks). Maybe if he made drum & bass it would sound a bit like this. Actually, the tune is the happy accident that led to the whole EP. As Jonny explains:
'I was trying to make a hip hop beat for a new live routine on my MPC, but the beats didn't sound right. So I kept the soul chops but swapped out the headnod beat for some jungle rhythms and it brought the track to life. The rest of the EP flowed really quickly from there.'

Next up, Jonny tries a similar trick on his own boom bap tune 'Stay in Your Lane' from the 'Night Lights' EP. His new Step Off Mix totally recontextualises US MC Lady K's slinky soulful rap and hooks with a tough and funky junglist groove. One for fans of the old Roni Size/Bahamadia collab. 'Create' then spaces things out just a touch, bringing atmospheric drumfunk that should find room in the crate next to Paradox, Fracture and Neptune. Vinyl bonus track 'Nuthin' But a Jungle Thang' layers cascading amen breaks, timestretched vocals and a massive double bass-line over the wah guitars and synth whistling of a G-funk era classic.

With early support for Jonny Faith's take on jungle/D&B coming from Hospital Records, Rupture (Rinse FM) and Fanu (Metalheadz), Jonny is ready to be welcomed (back) into the scene.
