'He Speaks (Live)' by LA's Nailah was first played on Stylin' in 2009, setting off a chain of events that led to Gilles Peterson airplay and gigs, collaborations with Robert Glasper, Nicola Conte and Jose James and a record deal with Universal (as Nailah Porter). Since then this song became unavailable and this edit (which includes three minutes of additional material from the original performance) was released here for the first time.

After laying down a highly unusual blend of latin, trap, G-funk and soul on a recent remix of London's Los Charly's Orchestra, Cy extends his palette further on 'Carmen'. Drawing on his skills as composer, producer, pianist, saxophonist and vocalist, the sound ranges from the feelgood synth-funk of 'Cool Change' and 8-bit baroque beats of 'Carmen San Diego' to the leftfield bossa of 'The Wishing Well' and smoky jazz club vibes of 'RDJ'. The latter gets a remix from LA's Daniel Crawford, whose album 'The Awakening' (feat. Amp Fiddler and Vikter Duplaix) was a big favourite for me and Cy. Daniel adds a warm and soulful touch on his remix, recalling the days of George Duke teaming up with Milton Nascimento.

Cy Gorman - 12. RDJ (Daniel Crawford Remix)

Cy Gorman's 'Carmen' is out now on Heard and Felt vinyl and digital, and gathering some heavyweight supporters including Jazzy Jeff, Gilles Peterson, Lewi McKirdy (Triple J), Toshio Matsuura, Kev Beadle, Jay Scarlett, Rob Luis, Soil & Pimp Sessions, Patrick Forge and Andrew Jervis.

This bonus EP is designed to be an audio-visual companion to the original album, with some tasty new extras included. There's 'Carmen Prelude Pt 2', which has Cy on acoustic piano accompanied by a symphony of life support bleeps. There's also 'Missy Reconstruction', a 100bpm electronic banger with twisted fragments of that unmistakeable voice. And finally 'Up High', which sounds like Cy went backpacking in the Andes armed with nothing but a sleeping bag and an 808.

The track 'Carmen San Diego' was inspired in part by the 1980s video game Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, and was conceived by Cy as an audio-visual work from the beginning. So here we have included three videos, featuring original footage and images created by Cy himself. These feature some high-speed kaleidoscopic projection mapping onto studio models, amongst other techniques. The cover art for the EP is a freeze-frame from one of the videos, superimposed onto black felt (of course).

Cy Gorman - 02 Carmen Prelude Pt 2

Trained in jazz guitar, Melbourne's Juxtpose turned to synths, drum machines and techno after hearing Underground Resistance and Carl Craig interviewed by Heard and Felt boss Ennio Styles on his 3RRR-FM radio show.

'Technometry' centres around a huge buzzing bassline which takes a few turns along a path built on jacking drum machine beats and lined with swirling synth pads and a gurgling vocal hook. 

Christian Vance steps up with a raw and driving remix, stripping the track back to basics and showing why his skills have been sought out by Derrick May (for a collab in Carl Craig's studio!), Ripperton, Aril Brikha, Tresor and Versatile Records. 

Swedish keyboard maestro Opolopo (remixer to Gregory Porter, Omar and Joey Negro) then performs some magic better than alchemy, finding a way to turn techno into new jack swing with his funky ghostbusting remix. A shorter 'cassingle' edit launches straight into the Teddy Riley-inspired groove, a nod to the days of listening to Bell Biv Devoe's latest jam non-stop on your auto-reverse Walkman.

Also included is 'Boneshaker', a percussive and housier track that lives up to its name, sporting a bassline with the weight to match your favourite 80s house classics.

Melbourne's Cy Gorman returns to Heard and Felt with an EP of Afro Asian beats plus an Ennio Styles edit and an odd ballad. Check out Cy on the ukelele, 808, acoustic piano, samples, vocals and production, but there are plenty of collaborations on here too.

Cy's music, including remixes for Los Charly's Orchestra and recently San Lazaro (Hope Street Recordings), has earned him praise and plays from Mixmag, Gilles Peterson, Jazzy Jeff, KCRW, Soil & Pimp Sessions, Richard Kingsmill (Triple J), Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts), Lance Ferguson, Toshio Matsuura, Jay Scarlett and Andrew Jervis.

An ultra limited pressing of 30 lathe cut hand-stamped clear 10”s will each include a unique butterfly-cut felt sleeve insert. Made-to-order 'mini vinyl' CDs will include the cut out butterflies pressed into the clear casing.
