Inside the Groove – Funkadelic Edition

It's not often that you get a hold of a multitrack of a classic dance song. No less doing a remix of it.
I was blessed to get that rare opportunity.
A few years ago, West End Records did a remix contest for Sparque's classic & influential Let's Go Dancin'.
I was so excited, not only to enter but to get to remix a song that was such a big inspiration in my musical life.
I remember my turntable homies, Terry Hunter and Dimitri From Paris, were pressing me hard to finish the mix before the deadline.
I was so nervous working on it because I wanted it perfect and respectful to the original song.
Plus it was a tribute to my remixing heroes, Larry Levan & Francois Kerkorian, who originally remixed this song.
I didn't win the contest(that honor went to the late, great Ethan White of Tortured Soul who did a fantastic remix).
But, I thought that I would still share it with the world and hope it would be enjoyed.
So, straight from the Underdog archives, here's my remix!
And I dedicate it to the memory of Ethan, who's talent and brief friendship I will always cherish!

Patrice Rushen – Never Gonna Give You Up (Joey Negro Re-Grooved Mix)
I procured the multi for this killer dance cut from Patrice’s “Posh” album over 5 years ago and completed the remix a while back but we couldn’t clear it for RWL 2 due to the rights to her music being in limbo while it was sold by Warner Brothers to German indie !K7. This is one of the more radical remixes on the album. In all other cases I base the new version around the original music, sometimes adding extra riffs or replaying bass or guitar. I tried that approach on “Never…” but it just wasn’t happening. I went back to it a few times but I didn’t seem to be able to come up with anything particularly interesting so I decided to go a different direction and attempt to change the music next time I had Kaidi Tatham in the studio playing keys. He did a great job with a groove that is a little like her classic “Number One” and though the chords are different we managed to make most of the original strings and brass work with them.

It can be said that a classic is timeless and Quantize Recordings is elated to release the remixes of this one in tribute to the legendary Teena Marie.

Spencer Morales (DJ Spen & John Morales) bring you another gem from the vaults, courtesy of Tasha LaRae’s sublime rendition of Teena’s classic “I Need Your Lovin”.  This tune has remained a staple in dance music and Tasha’s captivating performance will have audiences singing this disco favorite with their hands in the air once more.

The musical talents of Gary Hudgins, Skip Dorsey, & Barry Woodley make this soulful house version an authentic banger. Working alongside producers John Morales, DJ Spen & Thommy Davis, it can only be described by one word; phenomenal!!!!!

Haling from the early age of House Music, Enrico Mantini is internationally renowned as a true Deep House pioneer.

Born in 1972, he grew up with music running through his veins, starting his long-standing relationship with it at the age of 10 by taking piano lessons and listening to adult music.

Since his debut in the music industry in 1990, he has appeared on cult labels such as UMM, Smooth Sound, MBG International and Marcon Music.

His music has been heard (and danced to) in thousands of DJ sets around the globe, supported by almost all style bigwigs like Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Zip, Raresh, Jamie Jones, Jeremy Underground, to name but a few.

As a DJ he has played gigs in legendary venues such as Tresor, Pacha, Space, Ministry Of Sound, Concrete, Hoppetosse, Paradiso, Kinky and many more.

Perfection has always been his obsession when creating and performing, and as an MPC enthusiast since 1988, he has composed and produced his entire discography with a minimal approach, using only hardware instruments and never compromising on quality. For these reasons, listening to his music offers a distinctive, unique experience.

In well over 30 years in the electronic scene, Enrico has produced hundreds of releases to date, earning him a solid reputation as an artist and ultimately becoming seminal for the Deep House genre.

Since 2021, he has given up producing House Music to completely focus on a very personal and emotive, forward-thinking Downtempo mix of Jazz and Funk.
