Programme note

Crosswinds, flickering, a breeze. The sound of a ferry coming ashore, or a plane shivering in a tempest. These and other ideas used in this work came to life during a ferry trip to Hiiumaa island, listening to various noises of the engine and the rattling of the ship, until,  suddenly, music emerged from the noise -- strong and powerful. 
The ideas were further developed during some plane trips, and there was even a part played by a "wistful factory" in Visby that, due to complaints from the neighborhood, no longer "sings", but once inspired me with the sounds of its machinery.

A symphony orchestra, which uses electric instruments and alters its sound live, augmenting classical soundscapes with modern technology. Here, natural sounds meet mechanical sounds, weaving a unified musical fabric. The result is a sonorous jungle illustrating the workings of a machinery and the beauty of creaks and rattles therein; sounds that are so common in our landscapes and environment, and so often considered terrible, but true gems nonetheless.

Apparitions (2022, Part 1, excerpt). Commissioned by the Swedish Radio. “Apparitions” has nearly a religious title for several reasons. The music conveys the spiritual world in the form of soundscapes with ghostly moods. Prolonged dark sounds are lightened by choir-like flashes of light and overtones. Pop-like rhythms are mixed with hissing, whispers and multitones, Rubber balls run along strings, the double bass screaming loudly and the bassoon hissing like a teapot with boiling water. Blowing sounds roll in like the waves on the beach and the voices inhale like asthmatics do. In my work I use a whole palette of different advanced playing techniques on several instruments combined with voices and electronic material. For several years I have been collecting sounds, mostly in Sweden and Iceland. Recorded sounds of harpsichord (Guðrún Óskarsdóttir), double bass (Jonas Nilsson), voice (Matilda Andersson and Mirjam Tally) and bassoon (Anders Matell).

Una Corda is an ensemble with a unique composition, encompassing three multi-string instruments: the harp, kannel and harpsichord. Despite the different historical background and characteristic timbres of the instruments, they are similar in terms of playing by plucking and intimate sound. Una Corda presents original compositions as well as Una Corda’s arrangements of Estonian music from the past century, bringing these valuable classical compositions into new light. 
Una Corda’s first concert took place in 2009. Since then, the ensemble has given many concerts and, in cooperation with Klassikaraadio, Una Corda have recorded music for Estonian public broadcast.  

In January 2012, Una Corda released their first studio album UNA CORDA.
