Ma Fin est mon Commencement (Excerpt) - Guillaume de Machaut - Michaël|le Grébil Liberg

r#1 is a duo for percussions and electronics. This is the first piece of a series I am currently writing which explores microtonality in various ways. I'm working on this project with percussionist Ruben Orio. 
In r#1, the use of just intervals between the bass and "melody" played by the electronics results in a gradual drift of the tuning reference. The percussion part is written for a DIY microtonal glockenspiel tuned in 36EDO (and a few small objects). It interweaves with the electronic sounds by approximating their floating pitches.
The electronic part is written for a custom instrument patched in Max/MSP and played live on 2 akaï MPK mini controllers and one expression pedal.
r#1 is a lullaby. It drifts just like the mind when sleep takes over.

Hopper is a variable-geometry ensemble that plays frequently in Belgium and abroad. It has fruitful collaborations with various institutions such as the Henri Pousseur Center, the Composers' Forum, and with talented performers and composers. Such direct partnerships are as much the guarantee of a settling in the current musical life as of an authenticity of performance.

Hopper is supported by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and is in residence at the Liège Conservatory since September 2016 and at the Composers' Forum in 2019 and 2020. It is unanimously hailed for its cohesion, the closeness and the musical intelligence of its performances as well as for the happiness to play together that it communicates.
